Looks like I'll be grabbing my second Disney Blu-ray (John Carter was the first.) in December.
I was just watching Julie Andrews in Alfred Hitchcock's Torn Curtain last night, and was thinking of how nice it would be to have Mary Poppins in high definition. |

This is good news, and I am grateful, but I must admit my enthusiasm has waned over the far too many years that Disney has ignored fans' desires regarding this and most (read ALL!) of its live action classics. Many may recall from years back news of Twenty Thousand's new 4K scan and restoration, inserts in other Blu-ray releases with tantalizing pictures of Blu-ray covers for "Pollyanna" and others, and yet not a thing came of them. Sigh. I am trying, but Disney has just plain worn me out.

I somewhat like the cover, though I'd change the Broadway Light lettering and go with the traditional lettering. Oh well.
But fricken glad this will finally arrive on blu, curious bout the Becoming Mr. Sherman bonus, hopefully we'll get more bonuses besides the karaoke and Becoming Mr. Sherman, I'd like to see a documentary on PL Travers/Mary Poppins series. Who wouldn't be surprised if Disney tossed in a sneek peak of Savin Mr Banks with the Digital copy? To recap the bonus feats 40th Anniversary Edition: Cast/Crew Commentary (Julie Andrews, Sherman Bros, Dick Van Dyke and Karen Dotrice) Cat Who Looked At The King Pop Up Fun Facts Musical Reunion With Julie, Dick and Richard Sherman Deleted Song: Chimpanzoo Making Of Mary Poppins ( I expect this might be replaced with a newer documentary) The Gala World Premire Dick Van Dyke's Make Up Test (as the Elderly Banker) Art Gallery/Publicity Gallery 45th Anniversary Edition: "Mary Poppins: From Page to Stage" (Deals with the Broadway production) "Step In Time" (from the Broadway production) "Bob Crowley's Design Gallery" (Concept, Set, Costume designs) |

Plus, the Gold Collection featured an exclusive featurette and a different (reconstructed trailer). Here is where you can find all the extras info:
http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=398 No doubt though Disney will port them over. |

I'm really curious in knowing what the audio will be, if Disney will remix it to 7.1 |

![]() (In our generation, for twenty years, that was the "official" logo of the movie since it opened. I've never known anything but, and it's nice to let us know we're getting the "original".) I suspect we're not getting the Broadway segments, as that was pretty much just the entire impetus for the 45th Anniversary version, but most of the 40th segments should be ported over. Thing is, I remember seeing this movie in theaters back during the 7-year reissues, when you could literally sit with an entire HS/adult audience who had zero memories of the movie and could watch it clean. (Especially since this was the late-70's/early-80's days, when "Mary Poppins" was synonymous with wretched treacly Ron Miller G-rated Disney mush, and all we remembered was Julie "4 solid freakin' years of Sound of Music" Andrews running around children's nurseries twittering about spoonfuls of sugar with a bird on her hand.) We ended up with an audience that was knocked for a loop in EVERY SINGLE SCENE of the movie, literally until the last end credit--This was the proverbial Never a Dull Moment movie, and there were 140 minutes of it. Ever since Blu-ray talk started, I've been waiting for some kid to say "Is it like really good? I've never seen it, is it going to be too cutesy, 'n stuff?", just so the rest of us could rhapsodize about it at length, but....is there no one out there? Are the days of blissful ignorance gone? Have we all grown up knowing how great this movie is? ![]() |
