What guy wouldn't go buy a Blu-Ray player if the wifey said, "Hey, I didn't know the Playstation 3 did high-def video, but Oprah loves it. I want one.", would say, "Nah, I think I'd rather spend my $399 on Pretty Punch."

Peyton Manning already sponsers Sony. But I can't think of one thing that Peyton doesn't sponser
.
HD DVD

Even he won't touch them.

The solution is the affordable combo player. Neither side is going to budge.

Actually I think she usually gives away Plasma or LCD HDTV's during her Favorite things show, which would go nicely with a new Blu-ray player and some titles. (I'd hate to see it be a Plasma and an HD-DVD player which would just help to prolong the war a bit more)

How would a Plasma TV prolong the war

If George Lucas would release Star Wars on blu ray, It would take more than Oprah to help HD DVD.

If you build it, they will come. I think Lucas Exclusives as well as Spielberg support could have a big influance on this war. Star Wars fans are Quite plentiful, and the sci-fi community would take note. Universal has Star trek, but the movies were never the hit star wars was/is. And the series in Hi-def? why? When it boils down, I WANT STAR WARS!

Insightful analysis. But that only means the consumer is the winner. Manufactures like Sony should just adopt HD DVD and dual format, right? That way Toshiba can reap another generation of licensing fee profits, just like it did with DVD. As a business, Sony and the rest of the BDA must love the idea of paying extortionist licensing fees to Toshiba for the next decade. The only winner in that model are the studios, who would push either Toshiba or Sony to lower their licensing fees or else produce for the competition and make no money at all.

The BDA has been so unbelievably quiet for the last several months, there is something up their sleeve. Sony needs to establish Blu-ray or it is sunk. There is no adopting dual. If HD DVD is victorious, the Sony will file chapter 11. However, the recent victories of HD DVD are pretty hollow. Nothing has changed:

(1) A 100k A-2 units were cleared with some great free press for Toshiba, at the cost of never having a single manufacture support HD DVD because the price floor has bottomed out;

(2) The Paramount deal, resulted in Transformers not pushing HD DVD to victory in weekly sales. Instead, it got negative publicity for fud(g)ing the numbers;

(3) The consumers are more confused than ever, with no one purchasing stand alone consoles. Meanwhile, the PS3 will push a couple of million this Holiday season.

Unless Warner goes exclusive or HD DVD wins a week in Nielson sales, HD DVD is going to lose. All this talk from North American media is hysterical. Honestly, the Japanese manufactures will dictate who wins. The BDA has the choice to flatten HD DVD by announcing JUST ONE CLEARANCE SALE of first generation players. Just imagine all old stock being sold at $199. The BDA has the choice of forking out a billion dollars to Warner for solidifying content exclusivity. Look at the BDA and then look at HD DVD supporters. You will notice that Microsoft is the only big player for HD DVD and they want HD media to lose. The BDA has the heaviest hitters in both content (Warner, Fox and Disney) and hardware (https://www.blu-ray.com/players)

This war is being waged over the Internet. No one knows or cares. The BDA realizes this and Sony is saying "let's grow our PS3 install base", keep the prices high, and work on getting back our content providers.

Until the 2:1 sales ratio changes, the BDA is going to change shit because it is winning the war and gradually increasing in sales with every week that passes.

Not the TV, the HD-DVD players & titles that would be given out on her show if they get to it first. Read the post again, the plasma was in response to someone questioning why would Oprah give away high-def Blu-ray players if you don't have a big screen tv to watch it on. I responded that she does usually give big plasma or LCD screens away each year, so adding a BD player & titles would be nice (instead of seeing her hand out HD-DVD players and titles ... which would only help to prolong the war!).

We need an Insider to get the BDA to have BD players given away on her Favorite things giva-away show, before the HD-DVD guys get to her first. That one show carries a lot of weight over the holiday season shopping. A wife looking for a gift that her hubby would like this Christmas..."I bet he'd love one of those Blu-ray high-def movie players that were on Oprah..." (as opposed to "...one of those HD-DVD high-def players...

That's her most watched show of the year!
Heck, I'll adminit it...I even watch that one, and supposedly, a lot of other guys do to.

It really is a good idea. As far as endorsements go, she would be the best. Honestly, it seems that most guys want to get high definition. If the woman holds the purse strings, the Oprah seal of approval might be just the push needed. Plus, word of mouth advertising is way more effective.

it's true, does anyone remember several years back when op had the ipod on her show and game them to everyone? How about Tivo? I seriously think it would work! But honestly, using the PS3 might be bad cause no one counts that as a "real" blu-ray player except blu-ray supporters. All the media and eveything are always like "but stand-alones have only sold blah blah blah and that's what counts cuz no one uses a PS3 for BD.... Whatever the media does not know snakes from dildos. OPRAH AND BLU-RAY FTW

I personally never watch talk shows and not a fan of hers. I don't think any endorsing by anybody will make a huge difference. Only way to a sure victory is studio support and we need another studio to swing the balance of power in our direction. Bring Universal on board and then there is no reason to own a Toshiba lemon.

I think a clearance of Gen 1 Blu-ray players is a bad idea. I would feel pretty screwed if I was an uneducated consumer and I bought one of those and couldn't play many of the extras or internet enabled content that is coming soon from BDs. Do you have any idea how much negative press we would get? Just take a look at the 1080i HD-DVD players that have been discounted. Horrible.

That's why I got a PS3 with WiFi that was sure to become the most supported Blu-Ray player made in the first year and a half of the Blu-Ray format.

Trust me, I am not an advocate for this choice, but it is just one that is available that would ultimately lead to Blu-rays victory, even though some bridges would be burned.

From my meager understanding the biggest drawback of 1st generation is lack of PiP and ethernet. Java can be upgraded via firmware. If you are sure that firmware can never fix the Java issues, then I agree this would kill consumer good will. However, I don't think that ethernet or PiP would do that. If Java can be upgraded, then any fix to those not technically inclined, could be given firmware discs at the B&M stores.

Plus, manufactures still need to clear old stock, no matter if some good will is lost to people who purchase and miss out on some features.
