Speaking of which, 88 uploaded this clip from the new restoration a few days ago. Looks pretty good IMO.

I have the kino and wicked vision Blu rays but still go back to my German dvd when I want to revisit. Hopefully the 88 films release will finally be an improvement.

It varies. I wouldn't be surprised if this is region locked since Kino's (awful) version is still in print.

It's conceivable that if you watch the Kino/Odeon version you might not notice how off it is. But like, there are DAYLIGHT scenes outdoors that look like day for night on the Kino transfer. It's just awful. It's completely drenched in dark blue at all times. I thought it looked way too dark and blue when I watched it even knowing nothing about the movie, but after seeing the EMS DVD and finding out some of those scenes were supposed to be in daylight and that even the night interiors had splashes of color (as visible in those youtube caps)...oof.

It's weird to me that they used a night interior scene for their sample of this disc. If they did one of those beach scenes in the light it would have been immediately obvious how different it was from the Kino. Based on the sample there, it probably will look like the EMS DVD and be fine, but it's hard to know without seeing one of the non-dark scenes.

If this transfer is even close to the EMS DVD it's going to be a huge revelation for anyone that's only seen the blu-ray.

Thanks for this information. I've never seen the film. I did see reviews of previous transfers, and that kept me away. From what I see in the new transfer, I'm ready to buy.

Daliah Lavi's son showed up one day on (what became) a TV movie I was line producing. He talked a long time and showed a bunch of photos of when he was a young male model. Apparently his father lived in Asheboro NC. I was surprised to learn that she lived in the western part of NC.

I've always wanted to see The Whip and the Body, but looking at bad transfers does not work for me — I like to see the film close to the intentions of the filmmakers.

I've only seen the film once via the Kino disc, and watching that trailer I have a feeling I haven't really seen this movie at all.
The difference is stark enough that it will probably play like an entirely new experience.

The bottom frame grab definitely has that Bava-esque lighting.

the e-m-s DVD which so far has been the only right
and proper transfer.

i’ve never seen a print or anything, but i remember catching this on prime video and i have the kino blu and i never thought it looked bad. but who knows?

it’s unfortunate with some of these older movies… i don’t think anyone is alive who worked on the picture could accurately say how it was supposed to look. maybe bava’s son might know? maybe he had a print that’s wasn’t run down.

but if that was the case, wouldn’t they have found it when they first released it on blu?

Unfortunately the HD home video landscape is strewn with incorrectly color-graded and timed transfers, like the old WHIP transfer, and nearly everything L'Immagine Ritrovata touches, like the yellowed-out job they did on THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY.
