Wonder if it'll parse DivXs through the upscaler - that would be the ultimate!! I know that was disallowed when streaming DivX through Yellow Dog, but if this is a more official upgrade might Sony remove the restriction?

There was a screen shot of home from a while back that had a divx logo on one of the video screens, so I'd bet money that this will certainly come true sooner than later.

Please, if you think someone's trolling just report the post(s). If you quote the irritating post more people see it, react and the thread goes off-topic more frequently.

Default Question about Divx playback on PS3

I know this was just recently announced and doesn't exist yet on the XMB but once the firmware update allows us to play Divx playback I have a question. I have some videos that say Divx on the bottom right while I play them but they are mpg files. Will the codec run something that's a divx codec in an mpg file or will it need to have a different extension?

Thanks.

if it's mpg it's likely Mpeg 1 or Mpeg 2, I think both will work, the DIVX in the bottom right corner indicates it was encoded at some point at a DIVX file but I don't thin it'll impact the file now. (if anyone ellse is readon this please correct me if I'm wrong)

Does divx mean it will play the .avi files? I've got like 600gb of avi and it makes most of the files 3/4 bigger if I convert them to mpeg. I'd like to hook up my external hard drive to the ps3 and access it by pc by the ethernet port I have on it. I've got 1tb...but sure I'll fill it up.

.avi can be anything, I've seen DIVX encoded files as .avi then again I've seen .avi files that pre-existed DIVX back in windows 3.1 days, think of it as renaming test.mp3 to test.ogg it's just an extension that depending on what application you have changes what program is default to open it (even if it may not understand the file) the content inside the file is what's important, do you know what codec the .avi file is encoded by?

The extension tells the computer what program to play it in as well as telling it what container format it's been placed. AVI is a container.

So you're saying the extension doesn't really matter as long as it says divx in the properties?

Will PS3 have a special Divx player or do you think it will play movies the same way it does with MP4?

DivX actually uses a variant of MPEG4 called MPEG4-ASP for video encoding. Incidentally, AVC, which Blu-ray users will mostly be familiar with, is actually MPEG4 High Profile.

Same, 500gb of divx files and the ps3 couldn't do it. but the australian version 2.00 doesn't offer divx support yet. So maybe it is to come yet.

Linux looks to be too fiddly to install, then i loose all my game data on the 60gb. Though i have been eyeing a 320gb western digital but their website doesn't have price tag yet.

Just out of curiosity, what does that even mean for XBOX 360 owners? Can they even access their own content?
