You know, if AVSforum just banned the 10 or so "usual suspects" on each side, the forum would be a lot cleaner with a lot less bickering. These guys always instigate & post "format war" type crap in the entire HDM section. Their excuse is "I'm dual format", I'm allowed to crap up all the threads.

I purchased the PS3 purely for blu-ray movies. I have a few games but I really don't care much for games, life keeps me busy enough and what little spare time I have I like to watch movies.

The PS3 (at the time, not sure anymore) was the least expensive blu-ray player on the market and it seemed only natural to me that if it played a game or two now and again, I was well ahead of the game.

Since the purchase and seeing the beauty of the upgrade capability of the machine and how well it functions as a blu-ray player, I will never second guess or have buyers remorse over this purchase.

I can't imagine a figure where only 20% of the PS3's are used for watching movies, I can't be in that small of a minority.

I say it's about time they start fighting back. I would like to see them do this in every market and hit it hard over and over again.

There was an ad on a terrestrial channel tonight (SD in the UK) advertising the latest POTC movie available on DVD and Blu-Ray in High Def which specifically mentioned the PS3.

Seems like at least one BD studio is on the ball... Advertising is one way to kill of that unsophisticated format. Hopefully soon and in a big way

I'm doing my part to help the attach rate numbers. I bought my PS3 because it's a Blu-ray player that also plays games. I own 1 game (Motor Storm that came with the 80 GB PS3) and 17 BD movies.

I brought my PS3 purely for the movies... I have 2 games that i brought with it and my collection of blu's is at around 30 and climbing. I too do not understand how HD DVD can say only 20% of us know it plays movies... I know many MANY people who have brought PS3's just for the movies with a game console added as a bonus lol

Shouldn't PS3 games count for the attach rate calculation too? Since they are Blu Rays.

Attached rate can be very misleading. Sample: if you sold 50 units and 300 discs, then you have attach rate of 6 (HD-DVD). But if you sold 10,000 (include PS3) units and 5,000 discs then you have attach rate of 0.5 .

If you see above they don't compare 300 (HD-DVD) to 5,000 (Blu-ray) which create confusion.

Furthermore, in economic sense, having big attach rate, means that it is matured (no much improvement can be made), while if is low, it means that there endless possibility that it can grow......... (just my thought).....

BTW: my player is also PS3 ....

Ciao

I have 4 PS3 games and 99 Blu ray movies. I used to have a standalone, but went with the PS3 as my sole movie player as it performs better.

I think I know of a way to determine who's using PS3s as a movie player or not. Just count the number of remotes sold for the PS3. What else are those remotes used for? Now, how do we find out how many remotes have been sold for the PS3?

Decent idea, but I don't have the remote and use my PS3 primarily for movies.

But now, with the PS3 included when calculating the attach rate per player, the BD numbers are thus diluted. This is what the Blu-ray Disc Association chairman meant when he said the HD DVD camp had "manipulated" the data.
A good example of how manipulated this data is, was in this article:

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/11...les_challenge/

"Yes, HD DVD backers may, on average, have purchased 3.8 discs each. But if there are only a hundred of them, that's just 380 discs. If Sony has shipped more than a million PlayStation 3s in Europe, that's 600,000 discs - rather more than 380.

Now which is the most popular format, in terms of disc sales?

Of course, rather more than 100 HD DVD playback devices have been sold in Europe to date, but the it's very telling that the European HD DVD PG won't say how many."

Their follow-up is a sight to behold:

Quote:
It's very telling that the European HD DVD PG won't say how many.

"Unfortunately, we aren’t releasing total sales numbers because we feel that it is early days for both formats compared to DVD," a European HD DVD PG spokeswoman told us.

In short, the organisation doesn't want comparisons being drawn with 'old technology' DVD sales, let alone its rival HD format.

Its unwillingness to release hard data leads us to believe that right now the vast majority of European consumers are not interested in HD DVD. They're probably not interested in Blu-ray either, but so big has been the take up of the PS3, in comparison to HD DVD, that it's building momentum. The upcoming cheap, 40GB PS3 will only drive this trend harder.

Register Hardware is bi-partisan - we can see advantages and failings in both formats. But if the European HD DVD Promotional Group really is confident its format will be successful, it should have the courage to come clean on the numbers. That it doesn't, speaks volumes.

This attitude is so silly. There is no need to be bi-partisan. Take a stand for or against one format based on the merits of each. We are not talking Religion or Politics. Sheesh.

The more HD-DVD talking points continue to fall, the harder it is for these "neutral" sites champion HD-DVD. HD-DVD is cheaper!? Okkkkkkk

What I find amusing is that they say PS3 owners don't buy movies, and then they say the PS3 is a horrible game console and nobody's buying the games. So they really think that people just buy the console and don't use it? Do they really believe that we just stare at the XMB all day or something? Yeah, ok, I admit that the game releases had been a little slow (and no slower than the 360 when it started) but I mostly bought it for a blu-ray player anyway (in fact I only bought it to play blu-ray, and then ended up buying games too). And yes, the movies I buy do count in the stats even though I watch them on my lowly PS3 which is "just a failed gaming console". Ok, whatever, go ahead and keep thinking that way. That's right, rest in your assured comfort that the PS3 doesn't matter, it's of no importance to the format war. Just ignore that man behind the curtain. Now if the HD DVD group can just find a way to "sell" (as in not give away with players) more discs since they have more players out there......hmmmm.....
