ZVI what type of stuff do you have for the rest of your system. We know the Bly ray but what type of tv, sterio, any line conditioner (that made a wold of difference for me), I believe there are some good blu ray titles out there and yes there is room for improvement, but it is pretty good for the preview which is what we are getting right now.

All of this talk about the current BD titles being a "preview" and comments like "wait till October" are assinine. Face it folks, BD launched before it was ready and the resulting inferior quality shows. Stop pretending these current releases don't really exist. Preview my ass! If this is a preview of what's to come the BDA can go screw themselves.

TV Samsung 56" DLP 5668, (soon to be replaced with 56" Samsung LED DLP)
connected to Pioneer VSX-84-TXSI via HDMI.
Sound is 5.1. Cables are good
So, given the right material I shuold be able to get a good pic.
Anyway, I do hope after CEDIA BDA will get their act together.

I, for one, would never pretend they don't exist. I call it like it is: HD-DVD looks better in almost every aspect when compared to Blu-ray right now. But, as much as I want a HD disc player, I don't think HD-DVD has what it takes to win the long term format war... though they may co-exist when all is said and done.

So, I am waiting to see what happens when BD is given advanced CODECs or BD50 discs. Because what IS out there right now, is not worthy of the name HD, and the BDA should have simply held off and focussed on proper implementation of their product. But, it seems very much like a lot of people have become beta testers for Blu-ray instead of purchasers of a complete and serious final product. It's a lot of money to be spending on technology in development you know?

Anyway, I do wait, and acknowledge. Cautiously optomistic that the future movie releases on Blu-ray, once BD50/AVC/VC-1 are in place will shine as bright as they (very rightfully) should.

Honestly: If they DO NOT measure up, I will start buying DVDs again - which I really loathe to do.

They only matter to you personally if you buy them.

One of the things I fail to understand is why HD DVD supporters and Bluray haters are so aggressive about this.

I assume that none of these people want to buy these movies, whatever their reasons.

If you don't want to buy the discs, why don't you just screw off to HD DVD heaven and leave us alone?

If you have not bought the discs you do not stand to lose anything by their existance. I have not bought the discs or the player. I am waiting for them to get better. If they do not get better I will not buy them.

It is really simple. Just don't buy it. All this whining, moaning and aggression is tiresome. Poor quality will not sell. The market will sort this out. It will improve or die.

They have 4 months to turn this around. We shall see how they do.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Perhaps we're a bit upset because i actually "like" and want some of the movies that look like crap. Sure I don't have to buy them and honestly I won't buy them but that means I can't watch that movie in high quality HD and I have to wonder if Blu-Ray is the format I should be spending money on. We shouldn't have to avoid titles because Sony didn't have their stuff correct.

A little frustration is natural.

I can understand a little frustration. I just find all the agressive negativity tiresome.

Consider this... Sony screws up royally, PS 3 is a pile of crap and BD goes down in flames...

Eventually you get Sony Pictures movies on HD DVD because BD is not viable.

The only thing you lost is time.

You may gain the quality you want... and may not... depends on the authoring of the discs. Maybe Sony would screw up an HD DVD release just as easily as they have done with the BD releases.

So unless you need these movies RIGHT NOW, I don't see what all the fuss is about. Chances are most of them will be re-released anyways even on BD - yet another reason that buying the current releases is a bad idea.

Vote with the wallet - force change Whether that change be better BD or no BD...

Only if you bought the player already.

I know some people here have but I imagine that most of the most critical people do not own a BD player yet.

People who have bought a player have a lot of room to complain But we all knew the risks with early adoption...

I would consider that.

I am leaning towards PS3 since it has more uses than just a BD player...

I think though if the WB discs with VC-1 are good then the BDA is on the right track. This BD50 stuff is kinda worrying. Though I imagine that Sony would rather delay than release a player that is not compatible. Also firmware updates can fix these kinds of issues...

i was leaning towards the ps3 to have my entry level BD player. then, when the next gen or two of stand alone players come out to get one of those.

Okay I hope this wasn't directed at me. Those who know me well are quite aware that I had 100% plans to buy a BD player and every disc I wanted. They also know that I did buy the Samsung and returned it once I saw the poor quality of the discs available firsthand in my HT. Like hmurchison, I'm disappointed that the quality of BD is bad because there are several titles out that I would have happily purchased if they looked better. That's where my frustration comes in regarding the Blu-ray format. The BDA has Sony, Fox, Disney, MGM, and Lions Gate. HD DVD doesn't have these companies. Don't think for a minute that I am just going to ignore these studio's catalogs just because they're not on HD DVD. Their movies are coming to BD and I am going to keep bringing up the poor initial showing cause I don't want it to be repeated when even more BDs come out of movies that I really do want to own. If we forget history we are doomed to repeat it. Anyone that wants great HD quality should be giving crap to Sony since they are the ones who orchestrated this dismal launch. They need to be held accountable and need to improve ASAP. HD DVD should have been dying already if Sony would have used a little more sense thus far. Those who know me know that I hated HD DVD for the longest time and always wanted BD to succeed. That said, Sony has not fullfilled their promises with BD so why should I give them a break?!

Well all you have to do is wait. If Blu-ray doesn't shape up soon, the format will die, and everybody including Sony will be forced to make HD-DVDs. There, problem solved. Quite frankly, it just isn't worth getting so worked up about something so trivial as HD movies. It ain't the end of the world if Blu-ray fails, ya'know. And besides, you returned the player, so it's not like you've been robbed of $1000.

My words may come across as thought I'm "worked up" but I can assure you I am perfectly calm. HD stuff is my new hobby and a fun one at that. I just want the best that's possible out of Blu-ray. At this point I do still believe Blu-ray will turn things around... I'm just a bit impatient obviously.

shido, that isn't the point (correct me if im wrong NYG).

the big problem is that most of us looked at a piece of paper, saw the specs and support, and figured blu-ray would be the clear cut winner. however, hd-dvd has come out with performing equipment (that, however has glitches and breaks as reported by some) and some great software. BR on the other hand started with a faulty player (that is now corrected) and some poor software. yes, the software is much better now. however, this has left a poor taste in peoples mouths after the anticipation that had been had. now, people want the world on a platter before they consider the format again.

Nothing to correct. You hit the nail on the head.

no doubt I posted a thread to tell people to go to sonystyle.com and say they better come out w/ dual layer+better codecs or they can go screw themselves and I will never buy another Sony product again. I wonder if anyone did?
