This post to Oliver's Facebook makes it sound like the Luxe packaging will be discontinued after the BB exclusivity ends.

Update on “Natural Born Killers” 20th Anniversary Blu-ray release date

Apologies! Some of you rightly pointed this out on our FB/Twitter pages. We looked and just found out from Warner Bros. yesterday that there was a production delay that... came up at the last second. Apparently not enough copies of a new complicated packaging style called ‘Diamond Luxe’ could be manufactured in time. As a result it’s exclusively being sold at Best Buy as of 9/30, and is available for pre-order on Amazon. It will be available in retail stores everywhere on 12/9 (without Diamond Luxe packaging).

Just for NBK? Or does that apply to all the current BB exclusive titles?

That's a good question to which I don't have the answer.

Unlike the other Luxes, Batman shows a November 11 street in the site's database. And although it's probably just another business-as-usual BB SNAFU, if I have the SKU right (8578114) NBK Luxe is currently showing as a pre-order (as opposed to readily available right now) at the Best Buy site.

I would guess it's all of them, since they were all made exclusive, but who knows really.

This actually makes me want to wait on Ben Hur. I would prefer normal packaging.

I think the important thing about this release is that it will be on DTS for the first time. It has always been on Dolby, then Dolby Digital, then Dolby True HD. But nothing compares to DTS

Technically, there should be no real difference for DTS-HD Master Audio compared to Dolby TrueHD (assuming the transfer got a DTS-HD MA format, you just plainly said DTS).
They're both lossless formats.
Unless this transfer gets a DTS-HD High Res transfer then it's crappy lossy DTS.

The only reason it would sound different is not because of the format, but because it was mastered differently.

To be fair, even with DTS-HD HR, you still can't really tell the difference.
Most formats starting at the DTS core are pretty transparent.

Even the Blues Brothers with a DTS core got excellent reviews and people most often forgot it was just the DTS core and not any fancy DTS format.

What makes DTS more pleasing is that it's more compatible (with newer devices) as the DTS core can always be read. If you're going to remux, store on externals, stream to devices, etc.

I'm a little confused, as I'm looking at this on Amazon and it supposedly is the Diamond Luxe packaging. I thought that was exclusive to Best Buy? I'm not interested in all the gaudy packaging, just director's cut in DTS and the new bonus feature. Is this going to get a repackage, or......

BB had the exclusive sales window, but that has passed and it's now widely available.
If you're not interested in the Neo Case(Diamond Luxe) packaging, I'm sure WB will reissue this version once the Neo Case version sells out...if not before. Seem like that type of thing happens more often than not.

Has anyone who has both cuts ever gone back to theater version for anything other than curiosity? I'm all for having all cuts, esp. originals, but sometimes the studio stuff is pointless in the face of a far superior director's cut. This is a textbook case of that, at least IMO it is. I had both cuts for years on dvd and never watched the theater disc from the boxset despite it being anamorphic and the DC dvd not being very good quality.

So, I don't care about theater cut or a new featurette, any other reason I might need this new release? Any noticable A/V upgrade (I see speculation so far, no proof)? Does the Luxe set have the booklet the DC solo disc does?

A lot of times people prefer the theatrical cut. I know I do for Aliens, for example, and probably Legend. I know people who prefer the theatrical cut for Dances with Wolves and Stargate.

I think in Natural Born Killers' case though, most people prefer the director's cut.

How are the extras laid out on this release, are they split across both discs? If the UK one is the DC only but it has all the extras then that'll do.

It's impossible to have all the extras with only one cut of the film because the commentaries are not the same. There is some overlap, but there are also sections that are unique to each cut.

Okay, sorry, I meant the video extras, I'm not concerned about losing one or the other commentary.

How are they divvied up between the two discs, if at all? Anyone?

One of the rare Diamond Luxe Warner allowed a screener for...

Blu-ray.com Review

The theatrical disc is exactly the same as before, the director's cut adds the new feature on top of the archival extras that it had before.

Just got the Diamond Luxe, and I've gotta say I love the packaging. I thought it was just a cardboard digipak, I had no idea it was these glossy plastic panels. It's got a decent weight to it, feels very solid. The surface will probably mark up like a mofo over the next few years, but for now it looks really nice.

Looking at the cap of Oliver Stone in the new featurette, it seems like Warners got some NBK soundbites from him at the same time they did the new interview for Any Given Sunday's Anniversary edition. You gotta love those guys, they really know how to wring every cent out of their productions. I wonder if they got him to talk about any more of his Warners pictures while they had him there? They've probably got another 15-minute featurette stored up for the next release of JFK.

Does the new transfer of the DC have the same telecine wobble as the old DC release?
