Many of my favorite movies are still not on blu-ray and the chances they come are very slim, and to get them on 4k is even slimmer!.

Considering the talk in the Goodfellas thread, I figure it's time to bump this again!

My greatest fear for it is that, like a lot of movies nowadays, they aren't being remastered to 2, 4, 6 or even 8k where available.
We are getting a lot of VHS, LaserDisk and DVD ports instead of proper Video Quality.
Also suffering is the Audio side of things. A lot of things are still being released with Lossy Sound. Heck, some movies are getting downgraded sound from previous releases.

In order for 4k to truly take off, DVD needs to be completely gone by the time 4k starts coming out.
Also, EVERY 4k Title must come with a BD and UV code in order to survive.
BD should not be a standalone option either, but 4k should also be relatively inexpensive, both Movie and Player wise.
Why does DVD need to be completely gone? It probably won't be because of the global market, but why can't UHD Blu-Ray and DVD coexist?

Same reason why VHS is now gone.
The Market can't sustain the 4-Way split!

Yes it can.

VHS was gone because it was less convenient than DVD, more costly to produce, and because DVD players were not backwards compatible.

DVD is still 68 percent of the disc market...and holding. It was 68 percent last year and it's 68 percent this year. At that rate, when do you think DVD will be gone?

I reckon they might make their 30th anniversary. Maybe. Hopefully not that long. I'd like to see Blu ray become the standard.

At the time VHS was discontinued the market was only a 2-Way split (VHS & DVD). There is currently a 3-Way split without issue.

VHS tapes are more expensive to produce than DVDs, so studios wanted to discontinue VHS. Blu-ray discs will never be cheaper to produce than DVDs so there is no reason why the studios will have a strong desire to stop making DVDs.

Why can't the market sustain a four way split? It may not be ideal, but UHD Blu-Ray may very well become a niche format, and that is okay. SACD became a niche format, and it is still around. Not to say that UHD Blu-Ray is going to be exactly like SACD, but there is a place for a niche format that a smaller base of people will get into.

It's not okay because to a certain degree, ordinary blu rays are already a niche format.

Now we have:

1. Standard physical format (DVD)
2. Streaming
3. Niche physical format (blu ray)

Since the introduction of home video, there were never more than two formats available for consumers unless you count complete freak formats that you couldn't even buy in a regular store. But now they plan on having four, three physical and digital. They want to upgrade a format that is still being outsold by its predecessor. This would be the equivalent of VHS outselling DVD in 2006 when blu ray was about to launch, and I don't think that VHS was even being sold in stores past 2003. And on top of that, now they have to compete with digital media as well. How anyone can be optimistic about UHD blu ray is beyond me, although it is understandable that people here see the glass as 1% full than 99% empty when it comes to the subject.

I am not necessarily being optimistic about UHD blu ray, I am just pointing out that a niche product can survive in the market place. I think that blu ray is a little more than a niche product, as when I go to big retailers such as Best Buy, Walmart and the like, I can buy movies on blu-ray there. You can't really find SACDs in those stores, but the format is still hanging around, albeit in a very small way. I think that if UHD blu-ray wants to stick around in those big stores then it will basically have to be as popular as blu-ray is right now. That might be feasible if the people that own blu-rays switch to UHD blu-ray, but I am not sure if that is going to happen.

What does "being optimistic" mean? I don't hear anyone claiming UHD-BR is going to replace BD. Almost everyone expects it to be a niche market for A/V enthusiasts. The BDA and studios understand this.

Does "optimistic" mean someone who believes UHD-BR will survive for more than a few hours???

We've also got digital purchases, so it's 4 at the moment, not 3.

Music has MP3, FLAC for audiophiles, vinyl, CD, SACD and streaming. The future is diversification. (I nearly added cassette tape, which seems to be creeping it's way back in, but I didn't because I hate cassettes)

That's not necessarily true: it may have been a two-horse race in the US with Betamax and VHS, but many countries had a third in V2000. Plus, Asian markets certainly had enough room for a three-tier VHS/Video CD/DVD model, based on pricepoint. Hell, you can go into shops in Hong Kong now and they still have Video CDs.

Yes it stands a chance amoung the 4K supporters but outside of that? Hard to say. Physical media may be dieing out all together because of steaming ect. Personally I will take physical media anyday but this younger generation loves streaming so thats where it will probably go in the future. But I see 4K Blu ray being succsessful in the begining but how far it will go after that is anyones guess.

It really depends on the industry. If they control their urge to price-gouge, it stands a very good chance of success.

If they give in to their traditional urge of charging top dollar to a small, affluent artist, it won't make it. I give it 28 months if they pull that stunt. It will go to streaming, a huge mistake.

stand a chance of what? Becoming the dominant form of movie media? Not even a remote one.

Being sustainable as at least a niche product or value add to bundle with blu rays? without a doubt
