Bob Stuart and Meridian have been the most committed of all developers and supporters of PCM audio. They didn't do SACD because they beleived that PCM was the way to go instead of DSD. There are several technical white papers on the Meridian web-site that explain this. Since BD makes good use of linear and lossless compressed PCM audio, Meridian (who developed MLP of course) are well-aligned.

Thank you for taking the time to write to me. I am not sure where you read this, but Meridian has not yet made any announcements about for which, if any, formats it will build players. Certainly the battle still rages!

I am not sure about your comments about HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray as regards ultimate quality. Both are capable of full bandwidth high-resolution audio, but I think your points on authoring are well made.

Best Regards

Bob Stuart

Well it looks like a good sign. They told you directly thy are not committing to building a player on one side or the other. Although they are a little short-sighted about the quality of HD-DVD (already maxed out its potential while BD has more capability), I think you may have helped them realize they should wait until the winning format is more dominant.

Lets hope they support BD in the near future.

Not such a good friend of Amir's then...

It isn't surprising, the HD DVD market wouldn't support Meridian, it has already pitched itself as the budget HD format, something companies like Meridian, Denon and the like are very aware of.

Do you think you should educate him in regards to the audio differences between the two formats?

I think Bob knows a thing or two. And he's right that both formats spec for lossless packing for TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, as well as PCM. And I was right that the practical result of the lower bandwidth/space on HD DVD often means the lossless audio option is omitted.

That would be the source, Meridian themselves.

They state there that no information about a player(s) will be announced until they have a handle on it. I've been told to expect the possibility of a prototype at CES in 2008, but it may get pushed to CEDIA 2008.

Bob is very close to the vest on this because he has helped both HD DVD and BD with some technical issues. He wasn't too happy with the HD DVD Promotional Group in the first place for leaking his player in a press release. He hates products being announced before they're ready or meet his standards. So he released the press release from Meridian saying they've joined the HD Promotional Group, but they also slipped in "working with MS on high end players," which does just enough to say that the HDPRG weren't lying, but then adds on at the end "we're not ready to say anything."

I have more on this, but they hate information being spread before they're ready to talk about it. Just know that they are working on a high end player that would make Meridian fans proud.

Wow do Amir and HD DVD look bad in this whole thing or what?

Sometimes, I wonder how many good laughs they provide to industry folks like Maxpower1987, people who know what is really going on...

This is becoming very interesting. If Meridian in fact is releasing an HD DVD player, will the BDA come to Bob Stuart and ask him to maybe build a BDP as well?

I hope they are not working on an HD DVD player, or if they are that they are going to also release a BD player.
It would be foolish to not make a player for the better selling format!

According to the press release (linked above) January 11, 2007, Meridian did indeed announce their work on high-end HD DVD players and that they had joined the promotional group.

It's quite possible that Bob Stuart's response to me mentioning that they had not announced plans was not a denial of product, but rather just keeping the corporate-lid on their product strategy. This close to CES would make sense to take that point of view.

It's also quite possible that "Lotus", the most active pro HD DVD participant over at AVrev, is Amir himself. Read his posts and it certainly sounds that way.
