Just got a response:
David Thank you for taking the time to write to me. I am not sure where you read this, but Meridian has not yet made any announcements about for which, if any, formats it will build players. Certainly the battle still rages! I am not sure about your comments about HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray as regards ultimate quality. Both are capable of full bandwidth high-resolution audio, but I think your points on authoring are well made. Best Regards Bob Stuart |

Well it looks like a good sign. They told you directly thy are not committing to building a player on one side or the other. Although they are a little short-sighted about the quality of HD-DVD (already maxed out its potential while BD has more capability), I think you may have helped them realize they should wait until the winning format is more dominant.
Lets hope they support BD in the near future. |

It isn't surprising, the HD DVD market wouldn't support Meridian, it has already pitched itself as the budget HD format, something companies like Meridian, Denon and the like are very aware of. |

I think Bob knows a thing or two. And he's right that both formats spec for lossless packing for TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, as well as PCM. And I was right that the practical result of the lower bandwidth/space on HD DVD often means the lossless audio option is omitted.

According to the press release (linked above) January 11, 2007, Meridian did indeed announce their work on high-end HD DVD players and that they had joined the promotional group. It's quite possible that Bob Stuart's response to me mentioning that they had not announced plans was not a denial of product, but rather just keeping the corporate-lid on their product strategy. This close to CES would make sense to take that point of view. It's also quite possible that "Lotus", the most active pro HD DVD participant over at AVrev, is Amir himself. Read his posts and it certainly sounds that way. Last edited by DaViD Boulet; 12-04-2007 at 03:41 PM. |
