If there is a new release Im really interested in i don't mind paying $20 on release day. In my experience release day is the best day for getting top dollar on digital codes (which always helps).
While catalog titles do drop in price eventually most of the ones I want don't stay low for very long. I tend to miss sales because I don't pay enough attention. I also don't like to shop and pay through someone besides my preferred online store (Amazon). Preorder prices are usally not too bad and it's not worth it for me to wait months to save $5. |

This. There are rare exceptions when I wanted a movie on release day even if it didn't have an exclusive, but the last instance I can remember is Skyfall.

Day 1 movie purchases account for less than 10% of my collection. Also, back-catalog titles newly released on blu-ray (if you're counting those), often sell for less than $20. So, I do buy movies on day one, but only a select few. Usually, if it's something a really, really like, or there's a killer day-one deal, or if it's a title that won't go down in price (Disney movies via their movie club).

I agree, and it's one of the reasons why we are not seeing a lot of back catalog releases by the studios, it's barely a trickle, and when we do get something good, it turns into a stream of "when will this drop to $5".

I only buy blockbuster new releases day one. They're the only ones I want and don't mind paying the price for. I honestly only buy maybe 6 new releases a year. The others are back catalog and unless they've been remastered with some real effort, $20 seems like too much for something I probably already have on dvd.
I'll load up on $5 and $10 sales though. That's a great time to get upgrades and films I'm on the fence about. |

I'm like many others here, buy day one for limited editions, store exclusives, promotional items. Also for certain titles I can sell the dvd and make a few bucks. If I wait 6-8 months I won't get as much or if I can sell it all. And Ive even sold the dvd, watched the blu, sold the blu, made money, then bought it again after the price dropped. Did that with Fast 6 a year ago and made money!
As for watching it day one, I used to all the time, then I got married and had a kid. In the last three years I've watched two movies on release day, Sherlock Holmes and the first Thor. But there are some I buy day one if they are a favorite. And making smart purchaess helps too. With selling and reselling I've barely spent any extra money on movies in the last two years. And increased my collection by a few hundred lol. )most of which are still sealed. |

Day 1 because I'm all about instant gratification. I do not mind paying $20 for a blu-ray especially when it comes with a dvd and/or UV/iTunes. I give the dvd away and I share my vudu account with my family. So I feel like I get my money's worth.
Most movies drop in price. Do I care that I coulda gotten it cheaper if I waited? Heck no. I work hard and if I want something, I buy it. There's no waiting!! |

It depends on the movie whether I buy it on day one of release...
Wide Release, not usually..though occasionally, with a movie I loved at the theater, I will get it if it includes a Digital Copy.... As for Criterion, YES! Twilight Time, YES! |

No because I only buy day one if it's a limited edition or something I must have on release. Otherwise I wait until it drops to a price I am willing to pay.
Like Big Hero 6 Best Buy cover, Mockingjay Target set or Hell on Wheels Season 3 with the cards all day one. Any season of Once Upon a Time or Game of Thrones is day one. But Sons of Anarchy I wait till it drops. |

I typically only buy day 1 for niche labels. Sure, the price might go down later, but why wait if it's one I really want to see?
Big studios put next to no effort into their releases, therefore they simply don't deserve top dollar. If a niche label has put effort into a release of a movie I want in my collection, I don't mind spending extra to see it sooner and to reward their passion and hard work. |

Some titles are so amazingly awesome that I fear they will sell out quickly and I have no problem pre-ordering them for $20-$30. The titles I'd eventually like, but I don't need that badly, I'll wait. For example, I'm waitng for Ted to hit $5, but I pre-ordered the Touch of Evil Limited Edition right away.

9 times out of 10, I wait. The only time I don't wait, is if it'll likely sell out quickly/in advance, or it comes with something exclusive that I feel it's worth it, or it's like GAME OF THRONES, where the 1st week price, ends up being the lowest price (for now).

Like this evening for instance, although I would have preferred to wait for a price drop on Dracula Untold, the thought of passing on the sexy exclusive Walmart steelbook and missing out on the opportunity to easily acquire it forced my wallet. |

I'm a bargain hunter, so I don't buy my movies on day 1, unless I'm getting super great discount. Otherwise, I wait until the prices are reduced significantly, or buy them used from local 2nd hand media stores, and online. Approximately 80% of my collection, are used blu-rays and DVDs and I've saved hundreds of dollars. It pays to be a smart shopper.

If it is something that I really enjoyed and really want, I'll pick it up during release week. Also, when it comes to blind buying movies, I usually won't do it unless I hear from a lot of people that it is really good or if there is an actor and/or actress in it that I really like.
