Either this is a joke topic, or, more likely, a troll topic.
TC is deliberately ignoring facts, and, when presented with them, procedes to move the goalposts and say he meant something else, ironically, it is equally inaccurate. It would be one thing to decry remakes in general and do the "rah rah rah no creativity" thing, because at least that is an opinion and therefore sustainable, but OP is actively denying facts such as remakes making significant money and/or achieving widespread acclaim. Ignore the topic and cease and disist posting, that's my vote. |

21 Jump Street/22 Jump Street (Hardly flops...both have 85% and 84% or RT alone...) The Departed Ocean's Eleven The Mask of Zorro 3:10 to Yuma Rise of the Planet of the Apes The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Godzilla (2014) Insomnia Red Dragon Sherlock Holmes Ben-Hur The Wizard of Oz The Fugitive The Untouchables The Thing (1982, which you conveniently looked over when blasting the prequel...Liked by audiences, was a flop, and hated by critics. Now a classic.) The Karate Kid (Well reviewed, and made quite a bit of money...) Father of the Bride (1991 film) Gone in 60 Seconds (2000 film) Sabrina (1995 film) The Magnificent Seven (Remake of Seven Samurai) All were well reviewed by critics, made money financially, and were a hit with audiences...That's just the ones off the top of my head. There's many, many more. Also, again, it's not like they only remake movies...Remakes, sequels, and reboots probably make up less than 10% of the total films you could be seeing in a year. But it's easier to focus on that I guess than actually seeking out movies that aren't. Therefore, it begins leading to this same topic being brought up over and over again. Rinse, wash, repeat. This thread's responses (other than the ones from the OP) are a good reminder of why I frequent this forum. Cheeky, opinionated bastards, but intelligent/entertaining enough to take the time to back opinions up with knowledge pertaining to stuff we're all here for.

I've always been curious how much of a remake's gross is made up of people whose only interest in it is "to see how bad it is". I have friends that say they are sick of remakes, yet they will spend money to go see them because they want to see how bad they are. And when asked why they contribute to them if they want them to stop, they respond with "The lack of one ticket sale isn't going to make a difference".

I have nothing against remakes, personally speaking.
I'm waiting for the EFNY remake, for instance. I liked RoboCop and Evil Dead. I was just asking a question, since on each forum out of there I see hate threads against remakes and so on... By the way: The Mask of Zorro (a remake? It features a new story, very original) Rise of the Planet of the Apes (a remake? Different story) Godzilla (2014) - Loved it Red Dragon - Not better than "Manhunter" Sherlock Holmes (a remake ??????????????) The Fugitive (coming from a series, movie adaptation) |

The only time I have a problem with a remake is when the original is actually good or in some way regarded as a classic. A great example of a worthy/valueable remake is The Fly. The original is dated, cheesey, poorly made and quite silly. The Jeff Goldblum edition is a terrific film in destroys the old one in every way possible.
A bad example is Fright Night. The original cast and film are perfect and despite some effects cheese its a great film that hits all the right notes with the characters and such. So, they go and ruin that with Colin focking Farrell and the completely unnecessary remake of a classic 80s horror film. There are plenty of other examples where rebooting or remaking is simply despicable. Ghostbusters? Superman? Effing kidding me? ![]() BLEH. |
