Did SF's rights to this title expire? Does this mean we can expect to see Universal release the Psycho sequels on blu ray?

I don't think Universal is giving 'exclusive rights' to SF in their contracts. Thus, many of these titles could be re-issued by Universal, or some could have come before, like People Under the Stairs, Darkman, etc. Shout counts on their loyal fanbase to buy their editions because of their extras and slipcovers. Universal can still release their own versions trying to snag in other customers who don't care about extras and commissioned art.

As they've done with Criterion.

Again: where is this info about a new team at Universal?

Not so much a new team, but a new mindset as RAH puts it

Quote:
We're going to be seeing more impeccable releases from Universal. There's an entirely new mindset in place, seeking perfection.

No more heavily degrained product. New, rock steady, image harvests on the finest of scanners. And generally, a very professional team in place from top to bottom.

I consider this the new Universal.

While older transfers will still appear, as creating new masters from original elements is both expensive, as well as time consuming, you're going to be seeing fewer of them, as new product makes its way through the production arena.

My advice is to read reviews, and grab that new product when it appears. If a release is noted on the packaging to be remastered, it will be a safe pre-order.

Much of the new work is being performed in-house, by the studio's own tech team, and they take things Very seriously.

Very interesting and welcomed news indeed. I wonder what drove this change in mindset.

I find this release pointless when I already have the one in the complete collection.

I've already got the standalone release (not to mention the Limited Edition of the Halloween: Complete Collection), so unless the PQ is significantly improved, I'll likely pass.

I may be mistaken, but when the Scream line started, when asked, Cliff stated that they licensed the rights for five years. It's still within that window, meaning that I don't see their release going OOP anytime soon.

With that said, Universal has a history of having concurrent releases of titles with other labels (see: Criterion).

My hope is that it makes the scream factory one dip in price to compete, I'm more interested in the extras than the movie but not enough to spend 20 bucks I guess I've gotten a fair bit of mileage out of the barebones DVD I got out of a $5 bin in about 2001 though.

Either way Halloween II had the original audio in the Universal blu-ray release.

Question

This seems kind of pointless, unless they add something unique to sweeten the deal, like including Terror in the Aisles on their Halloween II release.

It'll be more film-like just for not going through Shout's encoder, so count me in. The Universal HALLOWEEN II already > Shout's version.

Recently, I bought the Koch (German) version of Benchley's THE ISLAND for cheap (8 Euros) -- it's from the same master, but has none of the encoding issues of the Shout release and has a bit-rate about 10 mbps higher on average. Much better presentation. I'd hope for the same for HALLOWEEN III.

I'll gladly pick this up for the cheaper price if it's the same transfer or better than the previous release.

Isn't the SF release of H2 basically the same as the Universal minus all the print damage?

If so, no reason to think the Universal H3 will be better than the SF.
