Once Were Warriors:

If you haven't seen it, don't watch the video in the spoiler tag above, as it's a major spoiler.

My favorite is The Great Dictator. Chaplin made the film in 1939 prior to our entry into WWII and the world knowing everything that was occurring.

Chaplin's speech at the end of the film is one of my favorite scenes and the most powerful in film.

The last movie that I found really "powerful" was 12 Years A Slave. Was a brutal experience, as it should've been.

Natural Enemies
- Guy has a four-way with some hookers before killing his family

Bicycle Thieves
- Some guys bike gets stolen, has to get it back because otherwise his family will starve to death

The Road
- World's gone ... Boy and his Father have to move south through gangs, cannibals and worse.

Threads
- World gets Atomic Bombed ... and it is not a nice site. Death, decay and deformed babies.

Come and See
- WW2 partisan flick with real bombs and real bullets ... really really depressing.

The Rapture
- Immensely depressing flick (the less you know about it, the more impact it will have, trust me)

Women in the Dunes
- You will, in part, question your existence

I hardly hear this film mentioned. Bleak sure is right.

I didn't like it but Synecdoche New York is powerfully existentialist and fatalistic. It will make you question everything you value and hold dear in the world, and the very meaning of your existence at all.

Not many of them; most include way too much blood and gore than could ever be contained in the human body.

Tampopo
Underground (Kusturica)
City of God is a good one to add.

The Deer Hunter is one of those movies that rips at your insides for so many different reasons. I mean, not only are the goings on in the film itself intense (I won't spoil any of the details), but there's the realization that John Cazale is about to lose his fight with cancer, too. And, to top it off, if you watch Meryl closely in the scenes she's in, every so often, there's an underlying sadness to her performance that's just barely perceptible. She loved John, and fought like hell to keep him in the movie. As far as I know, that was one of the first times she really asserted herself in Hollywood, and she's been an absolute powerhouse since. But De Niro, Streep, and especially Christopher Walken gave clinics on acting. The Deer Hunter should be in every film collection. It's absolutely essential.

Do you mean brutal experience for the movie watcher or for a particular character?

I'd love to watch something that was a brutal experience for the movie watcher

Thanks guys. I'd much prefer something made after 1980.

Higher Learning was great by the way.

Platoon was brilliant, too. Something similar would be appreciated!
