Those EW pics look a lot brighter than the versions I saw first from AICN. They're cropped as well:

I've never seen this, but I've heard good things. I was going to pull the trigger on the DVD, but I couldn't justify the high cost. I'll definitely blind buy the blu-ray.

The first one is one of the best horror flicks out there. Dripping with atmosphere. The second goes with an Evil Dead 2 approach to good results. 3&4 are mixed with most viewers; personally, 4 is really underrated.

Count me as one who wants only the first one. It's a product of its time and the music, costumes, and atmosphere all contribute to this beautiful nightmare/dream logic that doesn't need to make sense.

The sequels decide to explain things. And then explain them some more. And then find new things to try to explain. I don't fault Coscarelli- I support him trying to tell stories independent of Corporate sponsorship and the sequels have a certain ragged charm, but they are by and large trying to recapture the indefinable magic of the first.

I feel this way about the second one, as well. It's a very well done 80s action horror flick.

Thumbs up

However this turns out, I hope we end up with a U.S. BD Sphere set of all five films when it's over.

Can you compare the new restoration with the same shot from Phantasm: Oblivion?
I don't own part 4 currently so I can't grab a quality scan for a direct comparison, but I found this online which is only a few seconds after the restoration shot, so again, for a quick and dirty look, this gives a very rough idea of the restoration work.

Excellent news!

While I would like a box set of all the films, ultimately I can live with just the first one...

Supposedly it was put on hold to work on the remaster of the original film. Both are said to be finished now however and are just in the final stages of production/distribution with a planned release simultaneously in late Q1/early Q2 of 2016.

Do you think V will get a blu release?

Hell yeah, most likely will be straight to Blu/DVD like the last 2.

Actually III got a very limited theatrical release.

Also to note, the black speck on the ball (I think it was the camera lens, I forget) has been removed on the 4K transfer.

Pretty annoyed my thread got torpedoed when I said "within a week we'd have confirmation" and what do you know.

I know it doesn't really matter, but.

It would be weird not to release the sequels too. The only reason for not releasing the box set (that I can think of!) would be if Coscarelli didn't managed to persuade Universal to give him Phantasm 2.

This film scared me shitless when I first saw it in my teens. I went to see it at its initial release and there only were one or two other people in the cinema which made it even more spooky. The weird dreamlogic made you think that anything could happen and I was so scared, I seriously considered leaving, which was the only time I had that with a film. I stuck it out though. I've watched the film a few times since and it never had that effect on me again, but I still like it's very peculiar and particular atmosphere and in replicating the feeling of experiencing a nightmare, I think it's more effective than the later A Nightmare on Elm St.
