When the trailer even pushes the voices actors over the film i found this a horrendous sell-out and commercial trash.

Call me crazy, but I'm really digging it. Love the overall look and the use of color. The concept sounded really unappealing way back when it was announced, and the teaser trailer was horrendous, but this trailer has really upped my interest in the movie. Seems like it is taking a page out of the ADD Cartoon Network style, which could go either way, but for now, I'm cautiously optimistic. (Not a fan of the way they advertise the celebrity cast either, but whatever.)

It seems like they were going for a DM2/Happy sorta vibe with the JT song. But I'm liking it too.
I was watching part of the Comic-Con panel, it seems that JT was pretty heavily involved with producing the entire soundtrack, and I know it's hard to tell anything concrete from just hearing people talk about it, but after watching that and the Sound of Silence clip, I think I'm pretty confident in the musical aspect of the movie. It definitely seems like it won't simply be a bunch of karaoke segments of hit songs. And considering I think JT is pretty up there as far as mainstream pop acts go, it appears that it at least won't be horrible. But if nothing else, this definitely looks like it'd be worth seeing for the visuals alone. The color palette, the overall production design, and the animation just look amazing, and I think it really distinguishes itself from other mainstream CGI flicks in that regard. Really have my fingers crossed that this will be another HTTYD or KFP rather than another Turbo (or Shark Tale, but I don't expect Dreamworks to revert to that level of bad at this point). I prefer the look of the classic 1990's dolls... I hate that they are multi-color, with a colored nose in the movie... Looks like a gimmick to sell even more versions of the same doll!!!

I will see Trolls for the animation itself and the world they've created. But these existing songs in a up-to-date version ( and without a doubt just dated in a few years), that's something I kinda dislike. Sing looks mediocre on all possible levels, I might skip it.

Still lookin' good.
I can totally see that being an issue for the songs, but if most of them are in the vein of Sounds of Silence and True Colors, I feel like they should hold up fairly well. But you do make an important point. I still love to watch Shrek, but All-Star and Smash Mouth's Monkees cover definitely make me cringe... a lot. I love All-Star, even if it's mostly due to nostalgia, but not in the context of the film. On the other hand, Rufus Wainwright's Hallelujah cover still holds up and works perfectly. (Though, I suppose to be fair, Leonard Cohen's original and the popular Jeff Buckley version are both pretty timeless sounding anyway.) |
