I saw this in the theater as an unannounced sneak preview attached to another movie, about a month or two before it was released. All these years later, it still makes me laugh just as much as it did then. One of my all-time favorite comedies. Great Jerry Goldsmith score, too.

im still gonna wait at least for a review before buying it because this is universal were talking about here and i dont see them putting a whole lot of effort into a $10 budget release

To those saying they hope Scream Factory does a release of this film later, the two guys who run that division at Shout Factory were on the Killer POV podcast last summer. When they announced that they got the rights from Universal for Army of Darkness one of the first questions was what about The 'Burbs? They said they had asked Universal for The 'Burbs rights and Universal said they wanted to do their own release of it.

Now obviously things could have changed between now and then but SF asked for The 'Burbs last summer and Universal said no.

I'm sure this is going to be cheap enough that if things change and Scream does get to do their own release later on, it won't be that bad to buy it again. Especially knowing that Scream will provide some great extras, while this one will likely be barebones aside from maybe the trailer and alternate ending.

Universal US only licenses to Criterion and Shout Factory. If any studio licenses it, it will be SF.

Universal sometimes releases their own version first and hope to move some copies before licensing it to SF. It's smart business. It's happened before on titles like Army Of Darkness, Darkman, People Under The Stairs and The Shadow. If this release is as mediocre as expected and sells decently well for Universal, a SF release in 1-2 years is likely.

But other than new extras, what else would a SF release add? Chances are the transfer would be the same.

Thumbs up

And I always loved how Jerry Goldsmith parodied his own Patton theme for Bruce Dern's character, heard here at 2:18-2:55.

It would be awesome if this was one of Arrow US' first "big Hollywood" wave. I'm sure Arrow US is working to get the approval to bring some of their UK hits to the US.

No offense to those who "love," "adore," and "worship" Shout/Scream but Arrow has gotten to the point where they can easily jump over them in terms of extras, picture & sound quality, and value.

If I were SF, I'd give the "deluxe edition" treatment to all of their future collector's editions. The model clearly works.

Scream is getting a lot better. Their Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 BD looks a lot better than Arrow's. Their Army of Darkness release is amazing. They're learning, just like Arrow did.

Right. That's why I included at the end of my post, things could have changed between now and then. I just thought it was good information for us to know, as of last year, Universal told them no.

So...

After years of requests, Universal announces THE BURBS...and, an hour later, people on Blu-ray.com are already thinking that they should hold out because the special edition from Shout Factory will be better.

I love this place .

This is why 95% of Arrow's recent and forthcoming releases are Region A and B. It's a kind of sneaky way of getting around the restrictions of ownership/licensing... or at least that's the way I look at it.
