Poltergeist II is a creepy film with some legitimately great scenes, but it has tonal problems and you can tell the ending was rushed. III, on the other hand, doesn't have much going for other than some cool mirror shots. The acting is really bad.

I don't know what they will do for III because the cast and crew aren't particularly fond of talking about the film for obvious reasons. Director Sherman was a pallbearer at O'Rourke's funeral and gets very prickly whenever talk of the 'original ending' or reshoots is mentioned. He denies that a new ending was shot because of her death. I even read a story from an 'insider' about how the original cut actually featured more scenes with her but was trimmed. He believed it was due to her terrible performance rather than the studio cutting down her scenes for PR reasons. i.e not wanting to be seen as exploiting a tragedy for commercial gain

It's cool to get Collector's Editions, but isn't just me or we have been overwhelmed by re-release in 2016, especially for horror movies?

Poltergeist II and III have been released on Blu-ray in May 19, 2015... It's only been a year!!! I still have the original editions wrapped, I think I'm gonna pass, but I'm still glad for the fans!

I seen this on Scream Factory announcement on Facebook last night and I'm so surprise Poltergeist II & III coming to Scream Factory... I just own Double Feature Blu-ray at Wal-Mart $7.88 bin last year and I just watched Poltergeist 1-3 weekend this year in April and I will upgrade to this Scream Factory C.E. and one day for me

Goldsmith's score for 'Poltergeist II' is outstanding. It makes the movie seem much better than it actually is.

Speaking of Goldsmith's score - I wonder if they are going to include the original ending, which was scored differently for Poltergeist II?

That goes for a lot of Goldsmith scores, especially ones he did in the 80's/90's. Supergirl is another one that comes to mind.

Goldsmith was the king of writing exceptional scores for lousy movies. The Final Conflict is my go-to example. The score is MAGNIFICENT, but the movie...not so much.

Goldsmith's excellent scores are what elevates the whole Omen trilogy.

That is very much the case. I had seen the movie as a kid, and then listened to the soundtrack a bunch of times. Then when I re-watched the movie as an adult, I realized how much the score had influenced my opinion of it. It's not a terrible movie, but the score definitely gives it a boost.

Imagine if they WERE able to work something out with Warner to sublicense that title. Well, a guy can dream.

The original Poltergeist is still the one movie I really wish had a proper special edition. I remember hearing a radio interview with JoBeth Williams back in 2005 and she talked about having done interviews for an upcoming special edition so maybe Warner just pulled the plug at the last minute because of the whole Tobe Hooper controversy. They released that 25 anniversary edition with only those featurettes that aren't specific to the film so my tinfoil hat theory is that those were only pieces of a much greater edition that got canned. Kinda like what happened with Scrooged.

Warner surely would've made their own Special Edition of POLTERGEIST years ago...make that decades ago. iMO Spielberg clearly does not want anyone making one as that is the only plausible explanation for why a film that widely successful and discussed wouldn't have a studio authorized doc or commentary produced for it. Hell they wouldn't even put the 1982 archival featurette... showing Spielberg directing the actors and setting up the camera...on the DVD or Blu!

Any more news about these? Are they stated to be the existing masters as per MGM's Blus, or new 2k transfers like Childs Play and ITBS '78? I wouldn't be surprised if Shout's double feature were, as the masters on the MGM Blu (that came out very recently) are the same as the ones on the DVD (crica 2006-ish), making them dated by now.

Also, if Shout! is doing new transfers themselves, good chance we'll see the original MGM/UA Communications bumpers preserved as they are absent on the MGM releases. They left the original UA logos on Body Snatchers and Jaws of Satan, and MGM didn't say anything because they weren't involved in the mastering.

I'd love to see a documentary on Poltergeist and that doesn't really require a special edition be made. We get a lot of docs now made for streaming or standalone release, and I would guess the only challenge for Poltergeist is getting people to talk about it, which most seem reluctant to do.

Only thing Warner could really do beyond that is a commentary, but Hooper's commentaries are usually terrible and Spielberg doesn't do them, so not a lot of temptation there.

No interest in the sequels, but man if they got their hands on the first film, I'd be all over it! That movie demands a proper release with a nice 90 minute retrospective documentary.
