I think it would be far more interesting if they end up going back to Armitage Trail's novel and basically did a period piece remake of the 1932 original.
That would really mess with people's heads that are expecting a hip-hop heavy soundtrack and "Say Hell to My Little Friend" to be spammed ad nausea. |

I have never been against remakes. In fact, some of my favorite films have been remakes (The Thing, True Grit, The Departed, and Scarface to name a few) and while I may not agree with a remake, I am usually willing to give it a chance.
However, it is my opinion that remakes/reboots should only be made under these circumstances:
My issue with most remakes made today is they pick properties for the bankable name only and never about the concept. I look at upcoming reboots/remakes such as Road House and Splash as prime examples of what is wrong with remakes. There is nothing in either film that screams we must remake this. These properties are being remade for the sole purpose of using a recognizable name in the hopes that it will be enough to get butts in seats. Remakes like De Palma's Scarface were acceptable because it was able to do and portray things that the original was not. The original, while violent for 1932, is tame in comparison to the remake. While violence doesn't equal a better film, De Palma's ability in the 80s to create a no-holds barred approach to violence and drug use which allowed him to create a believable world of a gangster. Point being, much like a War film should be violent to depict the horrors of war, the same is true for a film based on a gangster. I don't necessarily see a reason to remake this film a second time. I can't think of anything that a new film could add to the story to make it worthwhile. However, despite that, it could still end up being a great film. I just feel that they would have been better off making a Scarface-inspired film and called it something else. When you name the film Scarface, you are only inviting comparisons of not one, but two films. Last edited by leburn98; 08-11-2016 at 03:28 AM. |

Disappointing; I've come to expect more from Fuqua; a truly excellent director. I know I am at least somewhat hypocritical for being beyond excited for his Magnificent Seven remake and, on the other hand, pretty riled up about this, but that's just what it is.
Denzel would make a fine Montana, I guess, but maybe they'll go the all-female route and Elizabeth Olsen will take the lead role. ~ Anyways, more disturbing than the remake itself are these kinds of comments: Quote:
It is, in fact, a masterpiece of filmmaking, and a glorious 80's crime excellence fest. |

They better NEVER try to remake "West Side Story" or"The Quiet Man".

Agreed. Dredd for example was absolutely fine and they totally nailed the new one. Remaking that again would also be a silly thing to do. I still wonder why the studio didn't go "wait, the main character will keep the helmet on the whole movie? That has to change, re-shoot!!". ![]() Disagreed. Quote:
...No no no, it didn't flop because it was a bad movie. It flopped because of misogyny and the patriarchy. (*) (c) Sony marketing department Last edited by jimidini; 08-11-2016 at 09:24 AM. |
