EXCLUSIVE: Antoine Fuqua, whose upcoming Western The Magnificent Seven will serve as the Gala Opening Night Film of the Toronto Film Festival next month, is in talks with Universal to direct a re-imagining of another screen classic. He’s negotiating to direct Scarface, the third iteration of the crime classics that Universal made in 1932 with director Howard Hawks and Paul Muni, and again in 1983 with director Brian DePalma and Al Pacino.
http://deadline.com/2016/08/scarface...no-1201801594/ The new one borrows the immigrant rags to riches story, but presents it in contemporary Los Angeles. Jonathan Herman wrote the most recent draft, and Paul Attanasio and David Ayer wrote previous versions. The film is a Bluegrass Films and Global Produce production. The film will be produced by Marc Shmuger, Scott Stuber, and Dylan Clark. Marty Bregman, producer of the 1983 Scarface film, will also produce. |

Oh boy. It's only a matter lf time before The Godfather suffers this indignity. The original is a cult classic. Not saying it can't be remade and an enjoyable movie, but Scarface is Imo the one and only Tony Montana as Al Pacino epic. Re-imagine and call it something completely different.
Just my personal feelings. The original is just gonna be far superior in probably every way. |

I wish they would remake movies that didn't turn out quite right but started with good ideas instead of cashing in on good movies because of the name recognition. |

I do think after a certain period of time. A movie can maybe be re-done and modernised but like you said. These are established classics. I'd rather they put out new movies. Heck, Ben Hurr will be a steaming pile of crap compared to the original Imo.

I always laugh when I see people losing it over a Scarface remake, considering itself is a remake already. Haha! That just amuses me. That said, I don't see this new one being nearly as memorable or iconic, especially with Fuqua directing, but part of me is kind of curious to see what they do with a modern adaptation. Much like how the De Palma one was also, at the time, a modern adaptation.

I though the De Palma was using the '32 as a reference and not a direct remake? |

But I'd be more behind it if a different director (like Mann, Fincher, Villeneuve, etc) were involved. In this day and age when Ghostbusters and Ben Hur are redone for a quick buck, it's hard to get excited about any remake anymore, they all sound arbitrary (although I am intrigued to see what Fuqua does with The Magnificent Seven). |
