I'll have to upgrade Dracula once I go UHD, and probably Leon too if they release that, but I'll pass on TFE as I wasn't impressed by the BD. My hunch is still that the Gaumont was from the OCN and the last two Sonys some inferior element in their possession with baked-in harshness.

I don't entirely disagree, essentially I believe it to be a case of Gaumont: better source/worse transfer and Sony: worse source/better transfer. A shame we couldn't get the best of both for the new 4K master.

![]() You keep knocking me on the purism stuff, but last I checked it was part of the foundation of home theater. Weird how UHD has turned that into some kind of scarlet letter. ![]() |

Velvet, you know I've got me some properly calibrated SDR 709 settings but UHD is the 'Wild West' as someone described it, so designs on accuracy are great and good and noble but they've basically been thrown under the bus in this initial phase of UHD. So at this time, people are either steering clear of it altogether or are doubling down on this unregulated insanity, it doesn't do to come to this format without wanting to embrace the dark side. I had my doubts as you well know, but now I'm a true believer.
The weird thing is, just lately I've found myself tweaking certain Blu-ray movies this way and that anyway, not because I'm chasing the UHD dragon but because I genuinely dislike how they look, e.g. the overbearing digital edginess of Fifth Element or the thin-ass blacks in ST Beyond. |

I use a much higher backlight than theater accurate settings would be, I haven't used a pro-calibrated set in almost three years and I love some remasters that change little things like Star Trek TNG's did, so I'm not some purism nazi. I just think it's a good idea to have your head in that space for the most part while you stretch out, which everyone in this section (me included) is doing. |

...and in that vein I've made sure to check the colour temperature, white point, greyscale and primaries/secondaries of my UHD output with a colourimeter and HCFR to make sure it's as close to what can currently be objectively measured & quantified as a UHD 'standard', so I'm not straying as far from the reservation as you might think. I'm just saying that with this format as it stands today there's nothing wrong with easing up on the ol' purism reins a lil' bit. I won't tell the home theater gods if you won't.
You're totally a purism nazi when it comes to audio though. ![]() |

Many remastered Blu-ray movies. It's possible to destroy the original picture and audio?
Remastered is a good improvement...on Blu-ray. Or television 8bit rec.709 is limited for 1080p. Why not on 4K with rec.709?? My theory, same picture... It's good offer HDR rec.2020 is better important for 4K television. |

Yet another title to upgrade to UHD. Same with Bram Stoker's DRACULA, Close Encounters and some others. Is Sony taking a memorandum for the titles they want to release on the format such as Jerry Maguire but see how much it sells before doing so at a later date?
My guess is many of the Mi4K titles will be eventually released onto UHD, we just don't know exactly what process and order it is. |

My other opinion is perhaps Sony and other companies are seeing how well the truly mastered in 4K and above are doing sales-wise before releasing UHD versions. Because I know for a fact I don't want to own any movie which was mastered in lower than 4K on UHD cause it'd just be an upscale and not native resolution. (It's also because I'd only own Jason Bourne on UHD cause it's true 4K and not the prior entries since they're not sourced from 4K. Goes for hundreds of possible and current UHD titles.) |

They put Laybrinth out on both the same day. I really think it just depends on the movie. Jerry Maguire isn't a movie they wanted to put out on BD here, so why would they do a UHD? Know what I mean? The disc market is still strong for certain things but not catalog romance movies.
