It may not be a prime month, but there aren't a lot of openings during which Disney/Fox can release this.
The Kingsman prequel comes out in February.
March has the new Pixar movie and Mulan.
April has New Mutants (maybe)
May has Black Widow and Artemis Fowle

On the other hand, I personally am not very impressed by the Summer lineup so maybe they could put the movie off 6 months - although I suspect Disney has high hopes for their summer lineup.

She was pretty bad in Snow White and the Huntsman. It seems she now takes roles that compliment her personality. I suppose she could’ve grown too.

I'm a sucker for underwater monster movies. I'll most likely see this in the theatre, despite my utter lack of enthusiasm for the cast.

I like the casting, ehhh about Stewart (sorry fanboys), but everyone else though! Vincent Cassel, TJ Miller, Jessica Henwick, I'm sold!
