Will this lead to a UHD release of titles like Green Room or Moonlight?

Moonlight possibly, but even that's kind of a slim chance. I'd be shocked if Green Room ever got one.

Why is it unlikely for some of these independent films to receive a UHD release?

I believe Ex Machina is A24's most popular title so they feel they need to UHD-it somehow. Even though it will likely not be all that different from the BD, but money talks.

Would it sell well? Are any of you here going to upgrade? If there is no significant difference I'll just stay content with my blu-ray.

Yeah,I'm in the same frame of mind as you. Going to wait on the reviews before I get this. Love the movie though, one of my favorites of the last few years.

I love this film so definitely upgrading. I don't expect this UHD to blow me away in terms of PQ compared to the regular BD, but this is just one of those films I'll buy on UHD regardless.

Won't really know 'til it comes out, will we? It'll likely be cheap so it won't cost anything really if you sell the code and BD.

In my case, I never bought the BD in the first place -- so for me the UHD would be the version to buy in any case.

John Wick was less than £15, I'm waiting for that as it's bound to happen nearer the release date.

3:10 To Yuma also dropped to £15, so when Dredd gets there I'm on it.

I got the UHD fever so if 3:10 is $15 I might get that too. Screw it.

I only paid like $4 for my Yuma BD, so I'll keep the cheap streak going and wait til it's the UHD equivalent (aka under $10) before jumping on that

What are the chances that this will not be released in Canada? I'm starting to see 4K releases show pre-orders for the US and nothing yet here.

This is one of those few movies that's handled by a different distributor in Canada than the US... in this case Mongrel Media. The other big offender for subpar Canadian releases is eOne, formerly Alliance.

This one we'll probably have to import if we want it... no telling when/if it'll come out here, or if it'll even carry over all the same extras/etc. as the US version.

Anyone found if this actually had a 4K master? I know this has all sorts of filters and effects to intentionally soften the image and make things look kinda glossy. It was filmed with very high end Sony 4K cameras though so in addition to the softness, I wonder if it's also just a 2K DI or if it was ever actually finished in 4K.

It was finished at 2K (according to IMDB and American Cinematographer)

EDIT: See puddy77's post below

I'm not getting my hopes up this will be an amazing improvement, but I'll take any improvement I can get for this film.

This had a 4k DI with a 2k DCP. I just updated IMDb (changes take anywhere from a day to a couple weeks).

American Cinematographer said this had a 4k workflow with a 2k DCP:
Quote:
Molinare’s post pipeline for Ex Machina was set up for a 4K workflow, while visual effects from Double Negative were handled at 2K, the resolution of the final 2:40:1 DCP.
This is corroborated (and clarified thanks to American Cinematographer's typical ambiguous, afterthought style in regards to DIs) by a Definition Magazine article:
Quote:
Screen writer Alex Garland has now become a Director and he brings us a suitably twisted branch of the three pronged 'love' story. Ex-Machina couldn’t be anything else but a digital movie being shot and finished in 4K.
Quote:
Ex Machina was the second film Molinare has posted in 4k. Although both Belle and Ex Machina were to be delivered 2k, they decided to complete all work at 4k as they knew this would soon be common practice and wanted to ensure their workflow. Asa Shoul of Molinaire: “With the Baselight grading system being resolution independent, 4k isn’t a big step up for us; we’ve recently worked on Halo Nightfall with 6k material and Hockney with up to 9k images.
Edit: I also got confirmation from the colorist Asa Shoul via Molinare, the studio that did the DI:
Quote:
we kept all drama material at 4K and VFX at 2k. The film was shot at 4K with 2:1 anamorphic lenses and with the sensor of the Sony F55 and F65 at 1.9:1 (I believe) it produced an almost 3:1 ratio. Zooming in to create 2.39 gave us 2880 pixels across. So basically 4K acquisition, kept at 4K throughout the DI with an active picture area of 2880 across. So a 4K pipeline (also useful for 16:9 pan and scan) with VFX at 2048 across.

That's amazing! I'm now even more eagerly anticipating this one!
