I 100% know they shot a lot of the film practically. However that doesn't mean there wasn't significant amounts of digital replacement or digital enhancement done to those effects. I personally doubt it due to how much the film was pushed up (originally October 2017, then august, and now may), but what they shoot doesn't always end up on screen. The Thing prequel is proof of that.

I'm not surprised in the least. Especially in that shot. I'd be willing to bet that shot of the alien is entirely digital. The rig they build to shoot those scenes was real, and they aren't strapping some dude in a suit to the top of it. That'd be dangerous as hell.

Practical with digital touch-ups is the way it should be done IMO. Film in real places, use real costumes and practical monsters, then tweak with CG when needed to sell the illusion better. I wish more did it that way.

At least with this Xeno I think they had not a man in a suit, but a puppet. It looks like they covered up rigging or reflections on the Xeno head. The center line down the head looks off, both the movement and reflections, and it even develops an off-white glow. And the same area in the poster has some noise inconsistencies.
![]() But the muscles are totally CGI, the way they jiggle wildly. The tail and "wings" evoke the practical motion in the first Alien movies, as does most of the torso. So yeah, I believe this one is practical but with some light CGI-tweaking and completely CGI legs and arms. The overall motion is super realistic (and awkward, like it's a puppet), so if this Xeno somehow IS completely CGI, they're blowing my mind. |

Just for posterity, some of the practical effects work in Covenant:

I was just spoiled with the spoileriest of spoilers for this but am much more excited to see it now. It's totally understandable why some wouldn't like [insert spoilers here] or the "not-Alien-simple" plot (impossible after Prometheus to be honest) but this is definitely an opening night IMAX event for me.
It's exactly what I wanted and simultaneously what I didn't know I wanted. Pre-ordering this UHD the moment it's available. |

That's exactly how I imagined it. And Damon Lindelof isn't anywhere near this one. |

I find this fascinating, because I saw the film last night and for the life of me don't know what *the big spoiler* could refer to.
