Where'd you get the 4K trailers from, Drew? There's a LOT of homebrew 4K upscales out there.

OK, I've taken some screen captures from the 4K trailer for Wonder Woman and uploaded them to flickr. There are various levels of quality with this one...

https://www.flickr.com/photos/513079...57681486041242

I'm thinking about posting screen captures for whatever film I can just to get a possible idea of what the UHD Blu-ray could end up looking like. For those not familiar with flickr, to see the Original click on the down facing arrow icon and choose either view all sizes and then Original to view it in your browser, or just click on Original in the pop-up and it will download the image to your computer/tablet.

Wait, what's the source of this 4k trailer? They only ever released 2k trailers in theaters.

Thanks. Unfortunately because of Imax DMR, we still don't know if it's a 2k or 4k DI.

Indeedy, I said they were upscales from the start. See below for more...

Thank you sir! Unfortunately it still doesn't look anything like true 4K to me, even in the VFX-less close-ups and whatnot. Yes, it really does look far better than the youtube trailers but a lot is being lost to compression there, this is comparing the likes of a 175MB quicktime trailer to a 3GB DCP trailer after all.

One trick that I picked up from ye olden days of image comparisons on AVS (in Xylon we trust) was the downrez/uprez routine, whereby if you scale the image down to 2K and then back up again to 4K (using 'bicubic smoother' in photoshop), how much extra resolution does the native image hold against the down/upsampled one? In this case: not a lot. Some examples are below.

The third one does reveal slightly more sharpness in the fine pattern on Chris Pine's coat as those kinds of things are a nightmare for video to resolve (in the composite days that coat would be awash with moiré) but there's still nothing like a 4K bump in resolution on the original 4K cap. If anything it looks more like the difference between a pro upscale and a consumer one w/ref to how most studio upscales on UHD still manage to squeak out a shade more detail than the Blu-ray being upscaled by the player or TV.

Yeah, I agree. And to clarify, I'm not saying I think these are true 4K masters. lol Just trying to determine how many that claim to be "4K" are actually just 2K upscales. Especially films with heavy VFX's. Star Wars The Last Jedi seems to be advertising as 4K, but many of the 4K stills released by Disney look a lot like these Wonder Woman stills.

Last Jedi did actually get a 4K trailer though, not just for IMAX and their special sauce up-rezzed DCPs but the general release trailer, so I think the signs are looking good.

I was cautiously optimistic after the trailers, but I am so, SO excited to see this movie now that the reviews are out! Finally a truly great DCEU movie, and it sounds like Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot did a fantastic job with the Wonder Woman character in particular. Also sounds like we're still going to get the positive parts of Zac Snyder's filmic influence - primarily lots of gorgeous, ultra slow-motion battle scenes. Can't wait to check this one out in cinema, and I have a feeling it's going to look stunning once out on UHD.

I don't understand the flack that 2K upscaling gets. There's lots of examples of upscaling that look significantly better than the standard blu-ray counterpart, the Shallows jumps immediately to mind. This film is said to be highly colourful from reviews so far and HDR will greatly benefit it, 2K DI and all.

Hoping there's a Steelbook (or even standard 4K release) with this artwork; in my opinion one of the best superhero posters ever.
