To be honest, the characters in Bebop always struck me as somewhat racially ambiguous in part because of the fact that show isn't really set on Earth. The casting OK by me but yeah I'm still not sure how to feel about a new adaptation period.

Making Spike Asian wouldn't bother me, but we been through this already before with Attack on Titans and Fullmetal Alchemist. The characters in those shows are suppose to be German/middle European, yet cast Japanese actors in the roles instead. However, I let them slide because those were produced by Japan, and not Hollywood. But here, it feels a bit SJW-y.

But the worst crime is casting John Cho. I love John Cho, I grew up watching the Harold and Kumar movies, but they could have gone with someone better.

I think the casting is great! Bring it on! I'll make popcorn!

John Cho seems not cool/tough enough for this. The others I would reserve till I see. Still expect this to kinda suck though.

Yup, John Cho is a class act, very likable actor with more range than I'm probably give him credit for. He's good looking and will probably get into shape for this role, none of these factors concern me. What concerns me is that he is not the "cool" type. Spike should be played by a "Steve McQueen" type, someone who is just effortless cool and just oozes natural charisma. Cho's really at home in comedy, he's a very personable performer. I just don't know if he can be Spike... Yet. Time will tell.

Also, just let this sink in: The guy playing Spike is 5yrs older than the guy playing Jet...

Right? And they always make a big deal about Jet being an old timer.

America should just stop with the live action anime crap, we clearly don't understand these shows well enough in this country to do them justice with casting and scripts.

Much like what I said to Steve Blum when I first met him, I can't sum up the impact and influence Bebop had on me without taking up a whole hour. So its a great understatement to say that I'll be keeping this show a good hundred feet away from me.

This sums it up for me. I always saw jet as a mixed-race "The Rock" style guy, in fact he would have been perfect. I'm going to give the trailer a try but my hopes are going to be set very very low.

This was the first real anime that got me into the whole genre

Filming in New Zealand:

Quote:
Netflix has confirmed a reboot of Cowboy Bebop is being filmed in Auckland, after Hollywood stars such as John Cho were spotted around town.

The anime sci-fi film has a cult following and is being remade as a 10-part live-action television series for Netflix.

The streaming giant said its new series would be primarily shot in Auckland, with a two-year agreement signed for filming.

Auckland Tourism, Events And Economic Development (ATEED) boss Nick Hill said the production would employ more than 400 people. It would be the largest ever production based in Auckland, he said.

Glad it'll be a real Corgi. Was worried they'd CGI it.

John Cho injured on set, production halted 7 to 9 months while his knee heals.

Man, that is a long delay. Hopefully they can work with the footage they already have and get the special effects finished for what had already been shot. Hopefully we still get this in 2020.
