Arrow had to crowdfund in order to expand to the US and Canada. I doubt they have the extra capital to start releasing UHD products.

A very underrated film. I'm so glad Arrow are doing a new 4K transfer because it really needs it.

can't MGM use the 4k master to release it on UHD?

keep in mind that I don't know how this licensing business go, but seeing as a lot of the 'Master in 4K' blu rays ended up released on UHD a year or so later, I'd like to avoid a double dip

I admire your enthusiasm guys but, seriously? Put any hopes for a UHD release from your mind. 'A Fish Called Wanda' is not a film that will see the light of day on UHD. If it does, it'll be released on the same day as the UHD version of 'Three Men and a Baby'

Depends on the deal, since Arrow made the new master then MGM would probably have to license it from them. Or maybe the deal is Arrow makes the new master and MGM has access to it. Like Universal's release of The Game where the US/Can Blu is from the Criterion master.

But Arrow made a new master for The 'Burbs and Universal was not allowed to use that.

I reread the press release, the 4K remaster is Arrow's exclusively:

Quote:
Brand-new 4K restoration from the original negative, produced by Arrow Films exclusively for this release
MGM has to create their own 4K remaster in order to release a UHD or try to convince Arrow to license it to them. But I suspect, like The 'Burbs and Big Trouble in Little China, Arrow wants to make sure they still have a competitive stance.

It's way too early for catalog UHD from labels. I'm not even sure there will ever be a large enough market for a movie like this on UHD, to be honest.

(*looks over at the shelf at titles like LABYRINTH, THE MUMMY, GHOSTBUSTERS, GOODFELLAS, then considers upcoming releases like CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, LEON, THE FIFTH ELEMENT, DONNIE BRASCO, etc.*)

Ehhhh..."way too" early?

Don't dare say that.
The purist nazis on the forum will be trying to ridicule you as they tried with me on the UK thread.
To be fair, the film was made with a mono track but what seems to escape the purists is that there is a 5.1 track on the existing disc so I feel it should be included alongside the original mono but while mono is adequate for this movie Arrow have spoilt many a release by issuing their version in mono where previous there was a 7.1 HD audio track available too.
Choice doesn't seem to be part of the purist lexicon

Apparently Arrow don't think the UHD market is big enough to justify the additional cost of actually putting a 4k disc into production as it's much more than Bluray at present

I get it. I just wish they thought differently.

Me too.
I would have thought with all these 4k restorations going on they would at least tryout one of them. Surely the existing Bluray sales ( with Limited Edition boxsets all sold before release day on multiple titles) and the potential hype of a 4k Argento would be more than enough to justify a UHD for one of their dual territory Argento titles. I can understand not wanting to test the UK market but I would have thought there was enough interest across both the UK and US together

Donnie Brasco? Anyway they're a very small portion of the hundreds of discs released so far. Also A Fish Called Wanda is not Goodfellas. The labels are not going to jump in for a good while and when they do it will be with movies like The Thing, not this.

It may not be a GOODFELLAS, but I'd argue it's a LABYRINTH. In any case, it's just a little frustrating to see effort being put into remastering at a level the final product can't match. If you're only going to go with Blu-ray, save the money and remaster at 2K. If you're gonna go whole hog with a 4K remaster, then give it to us in a format that shows off the effort to the fullest.
