Carnivale was a really great series, and it's unfortunate that it didn't get the full six seasons that were planned.

In a lot of ways, it was really ahead of its time. It was subtle and complex, and probably asked a bit too much of the 2003 audience, but it would have fit nicely into our current Netflix binge culture.

Just started watching this on Amazon and am on episode 5. Well written with a fascinating story and group of characters. The production is beautiful with excellent attention to detail and mood. So far, I'm in love with this (as I'm with most HBO productions).

I have the haunting Bulgarian folk song from the ending of episode 4 stuck in my brain like a hot butter knife. The song is so sad and beautiful it makes me want to cry: "Mir Stanke le" from Le Mystčre des Voix Bulgares.

Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares - Mir Stanke le - YouTube
Exactly my experience!
I was shaken to the core by the ending of Episode 4 and never forgot that song.

Man I love this show and wish it had got it's planned 6 seasons (3 chapters with 2 seasons each).
Season 1+2 = 1934-1935
Season 3+4 = 1939-1940
Season 5+6 = 1944-1945

Sorry to revive this old thread, and no this is not about HBO bringing back the series.

I just started re-watching this as I watched the original two seasons when it aired 15 years ago. I noticed that the music sounded exactly like the music from House of Cards. The trumpet theme that's used when brother Justin is on screen is the same trumpet theme used in House of Cards. So I looked it up, and sure enough, Jeff Beal is responsible for writing the score for both shows. It makes me wonder though, why he would use the exact same notes in the exact same order to represent undermining evil. It looks like he has a lot of credits to his name, so I'm sure it can't be easy to come up with a new theme for every job, but this is two high profile shows. Seems a bit odd to me.

Probably thought that everyone forgot Carnivale and could get away with it.

It's totally not unusual for composers to re-use parts of former works in new material, especially when you're working to a tighter deadline like in TV. I assume he chose it himself or possibly the director might have requested he revisit his work on Carnivale.

But now I can't rewatch Carnivale without thinking that Francis Underwood is about to walk out and start talking to me.

Now you know how I feel during about 20 or more movies scored by James Horner in the 20th century.

To be fair, even a really good composer like Michael Small also copied from himself. MARATHON MAN and THE PARALLAX VIEW sound like the same recording at one point, right before Scheider gets surprised by Larry O.

Man I loved this show and could not believe HBO's bullsh*t at the time claiming "The story was over". Did they not watch the finale?

the HD streaming version is a bit disappointing looking IMO, really wished this was in 4k or even BD would be nice.

I still mourn this show on a regular basis.

That last shot kills me.

theres a similar show in its unusual tone (and nothing else apart from the tone), perhaps a bit weirder even, called Utopia. Its a UK show and got canceled after 2 seasons.

Both are probably my 2 favorite shows and both got canceled, one in the Us and 1 in the UK, I definitely like things that almost no one else likes, but yes, I periodically think about what could've been in both shows.

They could have done books or comics to finish the show.

...for "Utopia" (the original 2 season British version, of course. The American version was atrocious). "Utopia" is actually my number 3 favorite television show of all time, with "The Prisoner" (original 1960's series) taking the number 2 spot on the list... and "Twin Peaks" claiming the number 1 spot. If you're looking for new watching material you might want to give them a chance. Either way, as I have previously stated, it's nice to hear from a fellow "Utopia" fan.
