Idk, Marvel and the Russo's are really pushing IMAX for this one. There's a couple videos up on the IMAX channel now with the Russo's and Kevin Feige just praising the format, especially since the whole movie was filmed with IMAX cameras.

If any 4K release from Disney will get IMAX scenes at home that aren't exclusive to 3D, it'll be this one.

I’m pretty sure this movie is 2.39:1, across the board. All being shot with the same camera (Arri Alexa 65), they just picked a ratio and ran with it, like 99% of features do.

Good to hear as I felt the second movie composition and Marvel movies in general work much better in scope compared to the first Avengers/1:85.

Though with Guardians the films were only released in IMAX 3D, and some of the aspect ratio changes were frame breaks clearly designed around enhancing the 3D. Here the film is being released in both 2D and 3D IMAX, I don't expect expanded ratio (since history suggests there won't be after Thor 3), but really it now makes no sense not to include the expanded image on all home formats.

I'm with you!! So tired of letterbox. When did Marvel mess this up. Avengers 1 had full screen on SHD and 3D. Then Avengers 2 had letterbox on both. Guardians 1 SHD was letterbox and the 3D bounced back an forth and the same was with Guardians 2, Dr Strange and Thor Ragnarok. Thor Ragnarok and Guardians 2 also had letterbox on the UHD.

Marvel needs to go back to the way they did it on Avengers and the way DC did Justice League. Open matte / full screen on all media. If they want to leave the SHD bluray letterbox, fine, I have moved on to UHD anyways.

Of course Avengers and Ant-man were fullscreen they were filmed in 1.85 instead of 2.39:1 like the other Marvel films.

Infinity War Who knows? In non imax theatres it will be in 2.39:1, hopefully they give us the imax ratio on UHD.

And it's also possible that we'll get 1.78:1 or 1.85:1 as the aspect ratio on Infinity War's standard Blu-ray ?

Infinity War's AR on UHD is gonna be exactly whatever it is on non-IMAX screens. I haven't seen the trailers but whatever AR they have is probably what we're gonna get. 3D (if they even do one) will get the IMAX AR.

Maybe itīs a stupid question, but canīt they encode in 1.78:1 and then have an option to make it 2.39:1 just adding the black bars as if it was a subtitle track? It is just black bars, after all, not very demanding graphics! That way you donīt need two encodes, and you can choose the aspect ratio. Anyone here with enough knowledge about blu-ray/UHD graphics?

So those 5 listed above are ALL the ones that have featured alternating aspect ratios? (Excluding BP which hasn't hit home video yet.)
On their 3D releases, yes.

Really torn on this one. The IMAX trailer looks great, but composition-wise I really feel like the regular scope version looks better (since they also framed for it).

The regular release is in fixed 2.39 'scope. That's what the UHD will be. Note the DCP is also 2K.

As you said, the 3D blu will get the open matte IMAX ratio but I'm not crying into my cereal over it. Just from looking at the trailers the images are clearly framed for the 2.39 aspect, so I'm good.

Gunn made a big deal about the 4K and HDR and got Disney to do their first UHD release with Guardians 2

If there is no Imax ratio on disc, I might as well just get it on digital

I feel like the IMAX ratio is a Disney mandate since Beauty and the Beast and Pirates 5 also had the same thing; 1.85:1/"open matte" in IMAX but 2.39:1 regular DCP. And, *usually*, the DCP and home video release are "mostly" the same when it comes to aspect ratio at least.

This is why Transformers: The Last Knight had VAR on all the home video releases, because the VAR was on the DCP.

If the regular DCP is 2.39:1, then that's how the Russos want the film to look. They may be praising the IMAX AR in interviews, but that's likely because Disney want people to pay the big bucks to see the film in IMAX due to their distribution deal with IMAX.

However, not even the 3D Blu-Ray releases of Beauty and the Beast and Pirates 5 got the IMAX AR so who knows what will happen with Infinity War. I'm guessing it'll be 2.39:1 across all releases. The IMAX AR feels like a Disney mandate to me. If Solo and Ant-Man & The Wasp also get IMAX AR, I'll be more inclined to feel it's definitely the case.

I hope the 4K & Blurays get the IMAX version. I am more worried about Disney lowering & super compressing the audio. The people at Disney that keep doing this need to be fired or replace. Disney charge more prices for their home videos then give us a horrible audio sound mix. I want a loud, dynamic, energetic, sound mix on my 4K discs, for my speakers. It's like the people making the home versions are using a cheap soundbar or something for testing.
