I still have the Grindhouse Laserdisc for this (including vomit bag) so I still have access to an uncut version for the animal stuff, but looking forward to the Shamless edition to be able to watch it without animal cruelty.
Odd that Shameless have decided to flip the artwork, now the cannibal is left handed. Also noticed they have added "Make Them Die Slowly" etched along the woman's arm which is a nice touch.

I like that they included the sick bag.

Not because of the gore, but because the movie is really bad.

I have that exact same LD

Takeshi666 is right, the film is really bad. Not a patch on Holocaust... still buying it though, to keep my Grindhouse BD company

Had no idea that Grindhouse Releasing goes all the way back to the laserdisc days. What else did they release on laserdisc? Anything that never made the transition to DVD or Blu-Ray?

I once read an essay by Lloyd Kaufman (yes, that Lloyd Kaufman) about Cannibal Holocaust where he wrote about the psychological sleight of hand Holocaust pulls regarding it's use of animal violence to establish in the mind of the viewer that everything you see on the screen is real, thus the following staged violence is real as well.

That particular bit was in my mind quite strongly when the tour guide in Ferox eats the most fake goddamn butterfly I have ever seen in my entire life early in the film. Through it, Ferox unintentionally establishes that everything you see on the screen afterwards is fake - and that's an effect you don't want in a movie like this.

It's kind of sad really because when I was a child - or a teenager, I can't remember, it was a really long time ago - I saw the cover to one of Replay Video's VHS releases on the shelf of a flea market. It was the cover that only has a drawing of pile of bones sitting in a puddle of blood, along with the title, a nice big BBFC rating symbol. The actual screenshots on the back gave away very little, but the tagline, the simplistic cover art and the title alone were enough to make me feel slightly nauseous as I could only imagine what sort of gruesome imagery were within those video covers. It's a shame then that the actual movie never quite lived up to the hype that my juvenile imagination built based solely on that cover.

CANNIBAL FEROX aka ‘Make them Die Slowly’
Format: Blu-ray only
Release date: 30 July

THE MOST VIOLENT FILM EVER MADE - BANNED IN 31 COUNTRIES

A decade on from starting the cannibal genre, director Umberto Lenzi has the final word, pushing the vomit envelope beyond the sick with his utterly nasty, nihilistic apotheosis CANNIBAL FEROX. So unredeemable that its own makers denounced it as 'barbaric'..!

An academic, Gloria (Lorraine De Selle), journeys to the Amazon jungle where things go awry when her party encounters sadistic druggy villain Mike (Giovanni Lombardo Radice aka John Morghen), as the travellers venture further into the heart of darkness, they soon discover what it means to be hunted prey.

CANNIBAL FEROX aka 'Make Them Die Slowly', topped the official Video Nasty list for its raw, graphic scenes of torture, mutilation, murder and cannibalism. This new 2K restoration features new grading which revives for the first time, the original edgy look of the 16mm film stock it was shot on - finally presenting the film as it was first created by director Umberto Lenzi, on location in the Amazonian green inferno.

ALL previous cuts reinstated. The BBFC waived ALL previous cuts relating to violence (by & against humans). Therefore since all previous (non-animal cruelty) cut scenes of gore and torture and mutilations have been reinserted for the first time ever, this is the LONGEST EVER, HARDEST, GORIEST version ever legally published in UK!

However in keeping with UK’s animal cruelty Acts, there are some BBFC trims where some of the more gratuitous (unnecessary) animal torture have been substituted: therefore the animal torture scenes were removed and replaced by other visuals of the exact same duration, seamlessly edited-in, and thereby preserving the original duration of the film.

Why on earth would anyone think this was a good idea? They pulled the same idiotic trick with their New York Ripper release. It's one thing for a film to be unavoidably cut, but it's a whole other level of interference with the film for Shameless to actually substitute something else in at their own discretion - just to make up the run-time, as if that's somehow important enough to warrant defacing the film with your own edits, which presumably were never sanctioned by the director.

I can only imagine they're doing this so that when their release gets listed on comparison websites, the matching run-time makes it appear that it's the same uncut version as the Grindhouse edition. If that's the case, it's pretty cynical.

It's incredible to me that films are still being censored in the UK. It's 2018.

Censorship is one thing, but Shameless adding their own edits to pad out the run-time is unjustifiable and pretty egregious.

You don't need to see a coatimundi being stabbed through the throat. I repeat: you don't need to see a coatimundi being stabbed through the throat.

I picked up the Shameless Mountain of the Cannibal God. Will pass on Ferox. Less to do with the cuts more to do with the lack of new bonus stuff.

You don’t need to see this film at all, or any film for that matter.

The coatimundi scene was horrible and totally unnecessary. It doesn’t add to the story, and should never have happened, but it did and it was part of the film. Cutting it forty years later achieves nothing except alter a film and all films are historical documents (and sometimes the trashiest exploitation films are more revealing about their times than the more profound art films). They shouldn’t be distorted.

Adults should be free to watch this film if they want to. I did. It didn’t make me more callous about animal cruelty, quite the opposite.

And a coatimundi being stabbed through the throat 'reveals' this vital aesthetic and thematic symbolism to the socio-pootiical status of Colombia in 1980 how exactly? It is a straw man argument and I doubt the people arguing that this nanosecond of animal cruelty really ultimately needs to be in there because 'historical document' can even tell me who FARC are. If you think the Shameless release is useless because that one moment is missing and you cannot watch Cannibal Holocaust without seeing the acute pain and slow death of that one animal then, yes, there's something wrong.

FARC? Lefty terrorists.

But by “historical document” I was thinking more of how Italian exploitation film makers rolled back in the Seventies and what grindhouse audiences expected to see. It’s interesting from a film and social studies point of view.

What do you think is achieved by banning the coatimundi scene that everyone knows exists anyway? Surely the “dual cuts on one disc” is a better option, then adults will have the choice?

And while the coatimundi’s death has gone, the deaths of the turtle, monkey, snake, pig and spider remain.
