Blu-ray Samurai

I remember being really excited by the news that Spielberg was doing War of the Worlds. I wish he could have resisted the divorced parent trying to win the love of their kid(s) trope - might have been something. If Spielberg had made Close Encounters after he had kids, Roy would have never gotten on the ship.

Other than
[Show spoiler] at the end, I thoroughly love War of the Worlds. The 15 minutes or so when the tripods make their first appearance (through Cruise and the kids driving off in the van while the bridge behind them gets blown up) is some of Spielberg's best blockbuster work.

[Show spoiler] Even still today it doesn't fit, but I find it hard to let what is otherwise an exhilarating movie with some genuinely ingenious suspenseful sequences be held down by its underwhelming ending.

Blu-ray Archduke

Ah, the first "serious" Spielberg film I ever saw, back when I was just a kid (barely aware who the director was) and not a cinephile. I was stunned by the scene in which Bale's character tries to resurrect a dead person. Perhaps his most underrated masterpiece.
