Yeah I think it made it 1 week in our first run theater here. I was lucky enough to catch it last weekend at the discount theater, and just got back from my second viewing. An incredible movie, second favorite of the year and far better than I expected.
Hope it makes it big come rewards season and more promotion. |

I saw this last month at a sneak screening with Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal Q&A after. It's a very refreshing and haunting experience full of panache and deep contemplation about race, gentrification, trauma and surviving in a modern world that sees you as something you aren't. And Diggs NEEDS to be considered for Best Actor for the climax. That was something deeply profound.

I would have gave it a 4.5, but I have no problem rounding it up to a 5. It's my favorite movie of the year so far.
I've been listening to Daveed's music non-stop on YouTube since, just biding time til the blu-ray release. Here's a couple standouts if anyone is interested: [Show spoiler]

Saw this back in January at Sundance. Not a fan. I didn't particularly care for the story arc, or the Miles character. Perhaps I will warm up to it on a re-watch.

I know I thought I wouldn't like the Miles character based on the trailer, but I was actually really blown away and surprised by how much I took to him in the film itself. On a surface level, he's a problematic white dude appropriating black culture. On a more deeper level, he's an individual that grew up in an area, and is a product of his environment. He doesn't see black or white. He's not pretending to be anybody else, or fake. He is who he is, based upon where he grew up and how he was raised. He's also a very charming, sweet man that loves his child and his partner. He's no "thug". He's not buying a gun for street credit. He wanted a weapon to protect his family, as most supporters of the 2nd amendment do. Sure, he has a hot head, but he is loyal to his friends and his significant other. His change throughout the film is heartbreaking, and both the scene with him and Collin fighting in the parking lot, and the scene with him and his partner at the dinner table are both incredible and major moments of his life. They're both loud and subtle at the same time, and you see him finally let down his outward image and become vulnerable to those he holds close. Like I said, this movie is probably my favorite movie of the past 5 years, and has so many deep levels. |

I'm so glad this film resonated with you. But, unfortunately, it didn't for me.

So, I just finished watching Blindspotting, and all I have to say is wow. That was an amazing movie. I honestly can't find much flaw with it at all. The writing is incredible. It has a great balance of humor, mixed in with some serious and thought-provoking themes. The performances were excellent, especially from Rafael Casal as Miles, who's barely been in anything before this role. It's just a powerful, and timely film that I think people are going to look back on as one of the major highlights of last year.
So yeah, I would put this in my top 5 of 2018 list for sure. I can sort of understand why it didn't get nominated though. It's a movie that went very much under the radar when it came out, and just not the kind of movie the Academy typically nominates. I hate to say it, but if this movie had some sort of star power behind it, say if Jordan Peele directed it, or if some notable actor starred in it, it would probably be a BP contender right now. Of course, doing could also make it a very different film, and I honestly wouldn't change a thing about it. 5/5 |

As good and as different Sorry to Bother You and Blindspotting are, I couldn't help but feel that Atlanta has touched on similar themes explored in both films and did it more succinctly. I really do feel that show is first rate.
Blindspotting is soooo heavily influenced by early Spike Lee (especially Do the Right Thing) that it was almost like we got two good Spike Lee films instead of one last year! |
