If TVs defaulted to Movie mode most consumers would return them.

I would like to know how this "reference mode" is capable of displaying content as the creators' intended without calibration?

Movie modes are getting more and more accurate (and most of them have post-processing turned off), but most people watch content in mixed environments, there's never going to be a one mode to rule them all mode. The closet I've seen is Nu-Vision displays that have a Day/Night button.

Turning that shit off is literally the first thing I do when setting up a new TV.

It can't. Calibration needs to be done once the TV is set up in the room its going to be used in with the lighting that will be present, etc. You can't just have a one size fits all "reference" setting.

I remember being in Best Buy and they were showing Iron Man, it was the scene when he's flying with the jets while talking to Rhodey in the op center. But that MotionFlow was on ALL THEIR DAMN TVs and made the scene unwatchable. Blech.

The end.

Nolan is the man.
And the DVD, BD, and UHD of The Dark Knight all look like shit. He can't even get his films to look good so why should I care what he thinks about motion smoothing?

Thats the truth. Dark Knight BluRay trilogy is garbage with or without motion smoothing activated. The problem is the bad PQ. But at least the IMAX scenes are not so bad. Problem is Batman Begins has no IMAX. I am talking about BluRay. Not the 4k versions. And the remastered Batman Begins disk.

Dark Knight UHD looks fine, Rises UHD is one of the best I've seen.

Fun story:

I worked at Best Buy in Burbank, California for a year. (North side of LA). It had a Magnolia Home Theater inside of it, which at the time, was where you'd find super upscale tvs, projectors, sound systems, etc. Back then, the demo movie was The Dark Knight. That's what all the demo TVs inside Magnolia were screening, because of it's superb picture quality.

A man walks in and is looking around. He stops and watches a bit of the movie (which had the motion smoothing setting turned on), and stops a passing employee. He asks them:

"Hey, why does this look so weird? The movement of everything seems off. It doesn't look right."

Employee, clearly knowing nothing: "Oh, that's just the way the director intended it to look."

Man: "You don't know who I am, do you?"

Employee: "Umm, no?"

Man: "My name is Christopher Nolan. I directed this movie, and this is not what I want it to look like."

Needless to say, that employee was fired. And from there forward, all of the motion smoothing settings were turned off from our display TVs.

Apparently Nolan personally did something wrong to him as well as his family. Never seen someone with as much as an unjustifiable hate towards a film maker. Well there have been a few but he's ridiculous and yet can't keep away.

I find it odd. Even if one doesn’t like him, there is no denying his talent. TDK was a utter treat from start to finish and I left the cinema on a high. When a film does that, the director has my respect.

Have you ever thought that maybe he's just joking and stirring the stans up?

And I dislike that film. See other have different views than you. I pointed them out on the day of the films release and was harassed and told I was a troll so since then I have decided to go with it.

Well jokes are one thing. To keep it going for this amount of time? Also, where is the joke in the first place? He doesn’t like a director? Hahahahahahahaha

I don’t believe there are any movie fans out there that didn’t like TDK. I believe you are a Alien from the planet Steve.

In a flawed world where TDK is considered a masterpiece, I find his Nolan trolling quite charming.

On topic motion smoothing is garbage, listen to PTA. He knows.

I think every thread about Nolan should be locked. It’s just getting too damn much. His stans and haters have become equally ridiculous.

It's a great film but it is almost totally ruined by that ferry bullshit so I can see why some people don't like it.
