The 60s film was very faithful to the Shirley Jackson novel, the 90s film far less so, but it retained the characters and some semblance to the plot. The 60s film is still the best adaption. |

I just finished Episode 8 and I'm pretty into it right now. It uses some tropes and names from the book and 1963 movie as a jumping off point, but it's a totally different story.
I liked Oculus and Hush quite a bit. I thought Ouija 2 was executed really well for a by the numbers genre movie. This has lots of atmosphere and horror imagery, but it definitely is a slow burn and just as much of a family drama. The acting is wonderful straight across the board although so far and it may be intentional... [Show spoiler]

there plenty of similarities with the book (and the 60's film), like philzilla said it uses those tropes for its own thing. for example

Loved the first two episodes, but by episode 8, it's turned into a melodramatic bore. One episode was a giant 'go F yourself' episode, literally.
20% excellent horror; 70% drama; 10% unnecessary ie confusing editing of the timeline |

That’s how I feel about episode 10. So disappointing, because this could have been truly great if it ended on a high note.

Episode 10 was ok; Steve got a little too 'Zen Philosopher' for my tastes, but at least it didn't end in a screaming match. I always prefer the shades of grey but this had to end with everything wrapped up in a neat little bow. They could have cut out 3 episodes if they had stopped criss cross every scene 5 times from different povs

We just finished all 10 episodes, and we enjoyed it immensely. We watched the first 7 episodes last night, and the last 3 tonight. It was quite an experience, I must say. It requires every minute of your attention, but so worth it. I wish I could be moved like this more often after such an experience. If you enjoy a rainy day rather than a quick storm, I highly recommend watching the whole season.

Watched five episodes so far. This is a highly bingeable and mostly entertaining horror soap opera, but the idea that it's some kind of masterpiece is pretty ridiculous. This is in the same league as AHS except that it's actually entertaining most of the time and it's not going for a deliberately campy vibe.
My biggest problem with it is that--like a lot of modern horror-- the horror elements are mostly just tossed in as metaphors for "real life" problems. This is not inherently a bad way to do horror, but it's just so pervasive these days. In this case, the horror elements (while sometimes effective) are particularly rote and cliched (lots of CG gaping screams and white eyes for instance). There's this one image of an old lady ghost that looks exactly like a very common Halloween home decor item that I've seen a million times... the one that's like an antique painting of an old lady with crazy eyes that looks different from different angles. Come on Flanagan, you can do better than outsource your ideas to Party City! The show is mostly well made though, with good production values, and the family soap-opera elements are appropriately addictive (it's alot like Bloodlines, except better, and with screaming ghosts). The cast is good but Jesus Christ does everyone in these things need to be a Golden God? They aren't good-looking so much as they don't even look like humans. Bloodlines was the same way but at least Ben Mendelsohn looks a little like a regular person! |
