Whoever handled it, one would hope that they've done exactly what you described, digitally recombining the seps rather than dealing with an extremely dupey-looking source. I do hope they haven't Platoon'ed it though.

Did Criterion remaster Silence of the Lambs themselves, or did MGM do it?
Platoon, in my opinion, is an isolated/peculiar case. If “The Man in the Iron Mask” ‘98 can get a better remaster...something’s up. MGM have some great non-boutique label remasters such as Rain Man, Robocop, Rocky, and The Spy Who Loved Me. Usually, a good way to tell if Criterion did a transfer if Lee Kline is credited as a transfer supervisor.

Criterion's Silence of the Lambs BD was a Fox 4k restoration provided by MGM. FYI, this same transfer is on ITunes and Vudu in full 4k and HDR.

Rain Man, Robocop, Rocky, The recent 4k Bond remasters, and The Terminator were high end Fox restorations done for MGM a few years years back (and the recent Bond ones were certainly finished before the Disney takeover, which is said to put a halt to many operations at Fox for the time being).

Man in the Iron Mask was definitely Shout's own transfer (a 4k scan from original elements, which sounds like a combination of the negative and the IP patched in for credits sequences and damaged sections of the neg). It's like SF's other 2/4k scans in that they're film like, kinda wobbly and dirty/spotty in areas, and reinstate original UA/other distributors tags that MGM loved to cut off with their Lions, but lack the magenta tinged, EE'd looks of the MGM masters. All of SF's MGM scans, despite whatever issues they have, aren't smeary mess's ala Platoon that's for sure, which again sounds like Stone or the DOP ordered "a clean image" to ether MGM or SF when they were working on the transfer.

The 4K remaster was done a few years ago now, saw it on the big screen at the GFt in Glasgow 3 or 4 years ago now - looked great

They have said that exact same verbiage on other releases like The Graduate and Midnight Cowboy, which turned out to have a new 4K scans, so we'll know when the disc comes out.

To be honest, I can't imagine a scenario where they DON'T do that. There's no way theyvrelease the same master that's out there, so there has to be some incentive for them to tackle it.

It will be interesting to see how the mono on the blu-ray compares to the region 1 dvd (which sounds wonderful) - Criterion can be a bit over zealous with the noise reduction..

A Pathe title that wasnt just a smeary mess, but was also handled by Ritrovata despite the lack of yellow present. Unfortinutely, all overseas BD releases use the same problamatic master, so its not entirely Criterions fault that they were obligated to use it and forbidden to do a new, better one.

Theres more they put out with smeary licensor provided transfers, but ATM Children Of Paradise is the most prominite example I can think of.
In fairness, if you watch the restoration demo on the disc, that negative they worked with was in staggeringly abysmal shape. What was accomplished is a minor miracle and I can understand why it looks the way it does.

Yeah, I don't own the Criterion yet because I keep hoping it'll be released on UHD in their first wave, whenever that happens. Stuff like this and The Princess Bride I could see taking a long time, but Criterion would be silly not to prioritize Silence if they jump into UHD. Maybe I'm too optimistic though.

I don't want to support digital "purchasing" for a variety of reasons, the story about the guy losing movies when he moved recently being a great example.

Jeez, first Silence of the Lambs, then Princess Bride, now In the Heat of the Night...Criterion, why you make me double dip on such great movies?

Looking at the video on the Criterion page it looks pretty solid to me.

DVDBeaver caps are up.

Night and day! Beautiful work by Criterion. Just shows how garbage the original release was (also oddly stretched as well.) This looks like they used a different, much superior print for this scan.

I can't believe I ever defended that old blu-ray.

Yeah I was also one of those that tried to give the old BD the benefit of the doubt, but these new caps are a revelation. Will be getting this at the next B&N sale.

Looks fantastic. As predicted, they were indeed able to fix the registration from the separation masters, which is no easy feat. Kudos for Criterion on this one. Not to mention, it doesn't look like people will be crying teal.
