Just noticed Peter Craig is writing it... bit of an underwhelming choice.

Lucius Maximus Meridius Sigourney Ripley.

This thread is quickly becoming my favorite one. Time to sit back and enjoy the show

some salty people on this thread.

Though, I was taken aback by this news. I thought, oh God no, that time machine movie bs they were thinking back then.

It's not needed though I'd be interested just to see were Scott takes this. I agree with some that either Tom Hardy and or Fassbender could play the elder Lucius.

Though, I'd say first give us that final Alien prequel film and from there do whatever you want.

Oh, I'm a Ridley-o-phite through and through (Kingdom of Heaven is in my top ten and I'm a defender of his prequels + even friggin' Hannibal) but this choice for a project of his is baffling to me. Still, I'll sit and wait.

“(Crowe) rang me up and asked if I wanted to write ‘Gladiator 2,” he said. “For someone who had only written one film script, it was quite an ask. ‘Hey Russell, didn’t you die in ‘Gladiator 1′?’ ‘Yeah, you sort that out.’ So, he goes down to purgatory and is sent down by the gods, who are dying in heaven because there’s this one god, there’s this Christ character, down on Earth who is gaining popularity and so the many gods are dying so they send Gladiator back to kill Christ and his followers.”

He continued: “I wanted to call it ‘Christ Killer’ and in the end you find out that the main guy was his son so he has to kill his son and he was tricked by the gods. He becomes this eternal warrior and it ends with this 20 minute war scene which follows all the wars in history, right up to Vietnam and all that sort of stuff and it was wild. It was a stone cold masterpiece. I enjoyed writing it very much because I knew on every level that it was never going to get made. Let’s call it a popcorn dropper.”

In 2009, Gladiators director Ridley Scott told UGO: “We tried [to go with Cave’s script]. Russell didn’t want to let it go, obviously, because it worked very well. When I say ‘worked very well’, I don’t refer to success. I mean, as a piece it works very well. Storytelling, [it] works brilliantly. I think [Cave] enjoyed doing it, and I think it was one of those things that he thought, ‘Well, maybe there’s a sequel where we can adjust the fantasy and bring [Maximus] back from the dead.”
Nick Cave's batsh-t script going to waste is a big missed opportunity.

Ridley Scott might be my favorite director, but more for his overall body of work than his recent output. When he's on, he's on fire. However, when he's off, it's a train wreck.

Modern Scott seems to always have poor writers on his projects now just to stay controversial. Except for that misunderstood masterpiece the counselor of course.

At least this version of the story doesn't feature Maximus in the afterlife.

The only Ridley Scott films I don't like are 'G.I. Jane' and 'Prometheus', so i'm in for this, even if it does sound daft. In this day and age it's refreshing to watch a master filmmaker strut his stuff.

I'd rather he was doing 'The Cartel' though.

Hey, All The Money In The World was aces. And The Martian was charming too.

Oooooooh yeah, though a part of me would also prefer Wraiths of The Broken Land instead just because of him teaming up with Drew Goddard and the two of them adapting an S. Craig Zahler joint.

Not too big of a deal, there hasn't been a great alien movie since 3 and people hate that one too.

Yeah martian was ok but it was cutesy and matt damon just makes me cringe.

There are only three of his films I can't possibly defend, and G.I. Jane is the most recent one of them. I see people saying his recent movies are bad and I'm like, "what the hell are you talking about?"

As for his in-development projects, in my dream world he'd be focusing on The Cartel, Alien, and Wraiths of the Broken Land. Queen & Country sounds intriguing, too.

Will they cast a young actor or will Crowe do mocap?
