I kind of like the Simplicity of that cover design, but for God's Sake Remove the "Multi-Screen Edition" and MA Banner at the Corner! Ugh. I honestly can't get over it.

What are the chances Disney made a new 4K film scan for this?

I hope they won't upscale the Blu-ray master!

I think the master was already a 4K scan downscaled to 1080p.

I like it much more than the Lion King's standard cover. Will wait and see what steel looks like, although nothing will top the Mondo version.

Will UHD be when Disney finally gives us these classics the way they actually looked, complete with organic warmth and depth and texture, or will they continue to serve us sterile, flattened, digitally scrubbed and recomposited recreations?

Probably the latter, but until release day one can always dream.

To be fair The Little Mermaid in particular didn't have all that much tampering compared to their "restorations" of earlier films, though still had a decent amount of smearing as I recall.

What with T2 being pretty much universally hated (Lord, oh, lord why did they shove a 3D master on a 2D disc); I hope Disney choose the former. I still shudder at the thought of a Xerox film blown up to native 4K.

I have bought 44 UHD titles that were released in 2018. I'm pretty sure I could hold all of them in two hands if I were careful and stacked them neatly. Removed the slip covers as movies slide around easily with them on.

So, yeah, I agree with you.

Also, day 1 or close to it for this. I'm kicking myself for getting The Lion King on blu-ray days before the 4k announcement. I also have Bambi, Snow White, and Beauty and the Beast in the Diamond collection so I'm unlikely to upgrade those. Looks like it's time to shut off the Disney spigot and wait for 4k releases for everything else I don't have.

It looks like Disney got confused, mistakenly gave Target the "real" cover and use the intended Target version for the standard release... Would be nice if the 4K ones were different from now on since The Lion King wasn't the same.

I'm no expert but I don't think any of the remasters from the Diamond or Platinum line were in 4K. I believe that ALL Disney remasters are in 2K unfortunately. I would welcome a new native 4K remaster and am begging for it, but I am reluctantly accepting of a 2K. It will still be an upgrade from 1080p with HDR, 2x the resolution and Dolby Atmos. I have The Lion King in 4K and it's not leaps and bounds above the Blu-ray but it's an improvement nonetheless.

All of the Diamond and Platinum Blu-ray remasters were certainly completed at 4K, which is why the masters we’ll see on the 4K discs will be these same masters (with minor tweaks) over again.

I can’t find any sources other than this article from 2013, but I remember it was all the talk back at the start of the Diamond line how great it was Disney were mastering all their “Classics” at 4K.

I’m sure there’s pages of it on the Disney Animation board, but who could be bothered scouring it all.

Taste is in the eye of the beholder, but it's not a coincidence that most of the "UHD is meaningless" camp tend to greatly dislike the kind of product that we're currently getting on UHD, being mostly modern movies. I'm sure that if more titles that they cared about were released then they'd warm up to it, but unfortunately we're just not going to get an avalanche of catalogue UHD product from the archives.

Not that we're gonna get deluged with it, not on physical 4K disc anyway because the market is contorting itself this way and that to combat streaming, but without all us bad-taste-bears actually buying all this modern toss in droves then there won't be any chance of having a sustainable market in the future, i.e. one that convinces studios to take a punt on releasing whatever older and/or cult classics that would make some of the "meh, 4K" crowd truly embrace the format. Maybe the indies will pick up that slack, just as they have done on regular Blu, but again: the UHD disc market has to survive for long enough in order to make 4K a viable proposition for the indies in the first place.

Also found this quote on the 4K restoration of Sleping Beauty from the American Society of Cinematographers, posted in 2009
https://theasc.com/ac_magazine/Febru...ack/page2.html

Quote:
The first of Disney’s animated classics to make the jump to home-screen high-definition, Sleeping Beauty has been released on Blu-ray as a Special Platinum Edition. Transferred directly from the recent digital restoration of the original negative-source elements scanned at 4K, the film is finally presented in its intended aspect ratio of 2.55:1, allowing for maximum picture information to be seen on home screens for the first time. The film has been digitally scrubbed of any surface dirt and appears in pristine condition.

I looked through your colleciton, most of the titles that I see worth owning were 2017 releases, with a sprinkle of 2018.

I saw lots of films I've passed on in bluray for $3 at a thrift store.

The Lion King and The Little Mermaid are different, we should not assume anything about The Little Mermaid based on The Lion King. The Little Mermaid is a film scan, The Lion King is taken from the CAPS files.

Does that mean we won't get a new restoration for Cinderella?
