I mean I don't go that far. For my favourites and movies I'm proud to own in my collection I'll a) pony up for full purchase, albeit on sales if I can b) prefer it to be new so I get the packaging in full and good condition -- But for movies I would never think to buy on home video if it weren't for this format? Yeah the 4K disc working is all I care about!
Now, slipcovers I'm on record not giving two shit about. But the "First Man" slip and the Close Encounters slip are pretty sweet aesthetic. No surprise those are still on the amaray. While Apollo 13, Annihilation, The Mummy and any others I have were discarded to random boxes and are not 'mint' at this point. |

I try not to overthink it. When I buy a blu-ray, I'm paying for a movie that is stored on a optical disc that is kept in a protective case. Everything else is extra and imo unnecessary.
From my experience, I prefer used. I started my collection with 5 brand new blu-rays from the amazon prime sale. 3 of the 5 had damaged cases (cracks, broken chips, broken flap thingy for multiple discs). Fortunately, the discs were unscratched. I tossed the cases and threw the discs in a Unikeep binder. Since then, I've ordered dozens of used blu-rays (I make sure they're scratch-free, though). The cheaper, the better. Last edited by IndieBlue; 09-11-2019 at 02:09 AM. Reason: no real reason |

Thanks for the extra perspectives here everyone. One great thing about the internet is the ability to bounce ideas and thoughts back and forth among like minded individuals. After reading all of your replies, I felt better about not having the full retail package for these.
![]() I did add my used UHDs to my collection, but my OCD did require me to create a “used” category for them. The only one I left out was Murder on the Orient Express, as that one will not play all the way through. It does have some deep visual scratches though. It’s kind of a bummer too, as it was not a blind buy, and my GF and I both enjoyed the film quite a bit (we had rented it a while back). Many of the others have visual scratches (a few look mint), but so far, the rest have played fine. Obviously, I haven’t made it through every disc yet, but I spot checked all of them (playing 5-10 seconds at each chapter stop) and all was well, so I’m hoping everything else is good to go. Thanks again all! ![]() |

I get quite obsessive about movie packaging. I will always try to find the slip that came with the original title if I never already got it with it. It’s nice to display your movies that you care about, but not bothered about digital codes.
Buy a lot of my stuff with them already removed by the seller which is fine with me if I’m getting it a bit cheaper. If I have the code I normally save them up over a few months and sell them on, that way it sometimes pays for two or more other titles. Would buy second hand if everything like artwork etc... is included and it’s in mint condition. Most of my stuff Is from the states as I prefer US artwork most of the time, and like the thinner cases. |

I can't believe the condition of some of the second-hand cases I've received. How exactly do you beat up the cases? Exactly what are you doing to the case to get it in this condition? |

I actually enjoy the chase of looking for Slipcovers, makes it more satisfying when I eventually find them. |

If you get beat up cases or slips it’s usually because of the shipping. I’ve gotten more beat up cases through Amazon than sellers on eBay, some wrapping is a bit overboard at times but the care is appreciated. Bullmoose now ships in cardboard or boxes for multiple titles at once. Every once in awhile I’ll get one in a box from Amazon but their care is atrocious.

Must have the original case and artwork or why bother even collecting? The digital copy I can live without. I'm buying the disc because I want it physical.
Other than that, I'll buy a used copy if it's a clean or at least the artwork isn't damaged. I could replace the case if the price is a big enough bargain. |

This is a good point, 4k discs are definitely more sensitive to marks and scratches. I've only bought one used 4k disc, the Ghostbusters reboot, and thankfully it works fine. But I will be more careful with those.

I have no issue buying used disc. I do like them to have the case and artwork with them for the most part. Price is another issue, if I know it's going to drop in price soon (i.e. Black Friday) or if for a few dollars more I can get it new, then that's how I'll buy it. When GoHastings was around, I was buying used movies left and right during their crazy sales. Sometimes I would get NEW movies that were listed as used (Superman Anthology for $30 (at the time)). With 4Ks, I've only bought three used so far. Good deals can be had for the price.

615 films, mixture of new and used. I don't mind second hand (normally ebay) but I'm a sucker for packaging so will always make sure they're in mint condition.
Collectors out there might be horrified but I also don't mind hybrids - for example buying a bargain 4k disc or set then putting it/them in my favourite blu ray steelbook or box set. I've often done this and broken even by selling on the blu ray discs and digital codes, neither of which I need once I have the 4k. |
