I don't think anyone buying these films will be confused by what the title is, and who the film is by. I would say that his name is larger than I would like, but his name is probably more of a seller than Amores Perros is with his success with Birdman, and The Revenant, so it makes sense that the artist would highlight it like that. Countless books do the same thing, having the author's name way larger than the book title itself.

I'd personally prefer something like this:

Watching this for the first time (via Amazon Prime), and I knew based on the synopsis that dogfighting was part of the story, but I didn't know it would be to the disturbing extent shown. Thankfully, despite how realistic it looks, all the dogfights and portrayals of animal cruelty are simulated. Even knowing that, it doesn't make those scenes any less uneasy to watch.

Just figured I'd give others a heads-up, as I know some people are very sensitive about these kinds of things.

My god the second portion of the story is so insanely boring. The first part had amazing energy, and all that momentum is killed by the most generic soap opera plot.

edit: Third part is much better, possibly the best of the three. What the hell happened with that second portion? Like is there something I'm missing here? It doesn't even meld that well with the other two.

[side comment] oh please Criterion, get the rights from Disney/Fox for a deluxe edition of 'The Revenant' WITH the inclusion of the Dolby Atmos mix

(sigh) ... I can dream

I agree that the cover art isn't great. The TITLE of the film should be bigger than the director's name. Oh, well. I'm going to watch the movie, not admire the cover. And I usually like Criterion's covers.

On a related note, dvdbeaver.com has posted screenshots.

Why does the Criterion look so blue?? It looks like there's slight cropping on the bottom and top too, although since this is supposedly the correct aspect ratio I wouldn't mind it.

The color might be because of the Bleach Bypass process that the negative went through in post-production. It's probably way more accurate than the old BluRay, but it's a matter of getting used to the look of the film again.

But Criterion already released "The Revenant" on Blu-ray. Back when it was called "The New World".

I don’t get the comparison. Because they both have Native Americans?

Because "The Revenant" has always looked like a half assed imitation of Lubezki's Malick AND Cuarón compositions. I've never been a big fan of his shooting style with Iñárritu because they lack that distinct identity his imagery has with them.

Whoa there. These two films are so wildly different in tone and what not I have never equated them. Have to disagree here a little bit. I enjoy both films. The New World to me is superior though.

That is super different though. Another film that is worth having a separate color timing if you ask me. That is so different it will be like two different films almost if the whole film is like that.

Negatives almost never go through a bleach-bypass process. In fact, the only example I can think of are the exterior daytime scenes on the planet in PITCH BLACK, and even there it was considered something of a radical move. The process is usually applied to prints or intermediates because of the possibility of damaging the negative.

It was done on the negative. A few films have had that treatment, another being 21 Grams, which was also lensed by Rodrigo Prieto.

One technique that helped link Amores Perros and 21 Grams visually was Prieto’s use of the bleach-bypass process on the negative, but when he and Iñárritu began prepping Babel,

Let me add to that reply. Not so long ago Prieto did a live stream interview on his Instagram talking about his process and career, and in it he mentioned how he wanted to do the bleach bypass process on the negative because he loved Vittorio Storaro's work and he had done that same thing on The Conformist i think? he went on to talk about how the process affected the image, in particular the colors and contrast, and how he wanted to replicate the effect but more subtly on the last section of The Irishman. If someone can find that interview that would be cool, it's in Spanish though

The previous release was Lionsgate. Does this mean they've started licensing out their titles?

I had brought this up when there were rumors about Criterion acquiring this, and was told that Lionsgate's license was probably just for 20 years, and the rights reverted back to producers. But looking at the back cover, it does say it was licensed from LionsGate, so that is interesting.

The colors on this transfer look great. What doesn't look great is Criterion's or rather Pixelogic's (ha!) always chunky compression on high-frequency material.

The screenshots from this site's review made me a bit more hopeful that they have done a better job here -- but alas, no.
Seeing the actual disc in action today, I can confirm that in particular the grain handling is still problematic, resulting in a loss of effective resolution, although better than on ca. 2015-2018-era discs.
