This movie literally has a
[Show spoiler] . I mean, it's even in [Show spoiler] This is maybe my 2nd favorite (3rd technically) Tarantino film, behind Kill Bill 1 & 2. I enjoyed it quite a bit and thought the ending, and the lead up, were wonderful. |

This isn't my opinion, but some viewers felt, to varying extents, that "Basterds", "Django", and "Hollywood" were disrespectful toward the real-life victims, not the perpetrators. I think you could say "inherently disrespectful", but I don't want to put words in their mouths. Unless there's something else in the review, I wouldn't assume the writer is a Nazi sympathizer.

That's what YOU decided to read into it. I don't believe the reviewer is actually a nazi sympathizer obviously. That's why I mentioned it was a head-scratching comment he made

In one scene. People seem to forget that he pops up two more times where he's treated with reverence and respect by the people he's with (training with Sharon Tate for her "Wrecking Crew" fight scene with Nancy Kwan) and teaching Jay Sebring how to fight). Not to mention the major sequence he's involved in involves an unreliable narrator.

I'm curious; how many consecutive posts do you have to make saying "I obviously didn't mean the words that I said" before you concede that it's obviously not obvious, and that you're not communicating your ideas effectively?

I watched this last night for the first time.
It’s good...I enjoyed it. But’s it felt like every other QT film since Kill Bill. ...more about Tarantino trying to be cool than anything else. Was the Kurt Russell voice over really necessary in any way? The revisionist history bloody climax is so played out. But I liked it. It’s fun. ...that’s about it. |

After a second viewing and as a fan of Bruce Lee, I don't think this film was disrespectful to him. If anything it humanizes him as nobody is perfect.

This was a good film but not one of QT best but I enjoyed it immensely since I went to UCLA in the mid 70s. Loved seeing the corner donut shop in Westwood Village. Many Friday nights got a donut there. For myself the history of what happened was in my lifetime I KNOW what happened it was big news so his alternate history for myself was a little jarring. Inglorious Basterds and Django that's history before my lifetime so messing with it was fun. I also still believe QT has not made a bad film which is pretty remarkable since most great directors have a dud somewhere in their legacy. Loved his recreation of late 60s early 70s Los Angeles and the music he chose. More than anything this is why I love the movie. The acting all around was excellent. |

Again, I was NOT offended by the portrayal of Bruce Lee in this masterpiece. I was just trying to make a point that if one is trying to find (more like determined to find) something disrespectful in both films, it would be in this movie not Inglorious Basterds. I wasn't trying to antagonize anyone on this thread. I merely found the reviewer's take on that quite bizarre. That's all.

I didn’t find the depiction of Bruce Lee to be offensive.
But it was inexplicably douchey. I don’t really understand why Tarantino did it. There will be younger viewers whose first exposure to Bruce Lee is that scene. And that will impact how they view him going forward. ...what was the point? |
