I certainly haven't gotten as much as some of you, so of what I have bought...

Some of my favorite upgrades of classics...

There has been some stellar animation on 4K. I'll condense it down to two of my favorites series...

A couple of my Criterion pick-ups...

Last, but not least. A couple of my favorites of 2019 so far...

I've been working on this all week. Been an excellent year for releases, but I've finally got it narrowed down to 10.

10.
A crazy movie that I never thought I'd see on blu-ray. Rowdy Roddy made around the same as Carpenter's They Live. The Vinegar Syndrome treatment here is top notch, packed full of extras and encased in a gorgeous split cover.

9.
A few years ago, the British Film Institute performed a painstaking restoration of what they've dubbed the "Hitchcock 9" which is his first 9 feature films of the silent era. This set from Kino includes 4 of those pictures and one of his earliest sound pictures. It's a wonderful set.

8.
I purchased this one as a gift for my kids shortly after its release, and while I didn't think the movie was as good as Toy Story 3, I was overwhelmed by the presentation on our home theater. Disney outdid themselves here, the rich, vivid colors just jump out of the screen and turn your senses into goo.

7.
I was hesitant to pick this one up because the "25th anniversary edition" previous blu release looked great. But when I saw all of the extras Ctiterion had listed on their site, I knew that I had to have it, and boy, I was not disappointed. The amount of deleted scenes that they included here could make a second movie. This is a must have release for Lynch fans.

6.
For years all we had was the abominable Universal release of this Hughes classic which was easily one of the worst looking blus in my collection. And then Arrow came along with this fabulous release, and it was like Christmas came early for longtime fans. Amazing picture quality, and lovingly put together with commissioned artwork, new essays and loads of extras. Thank you, Arrow!

5.
Dating back to my old special edition VHS release, Apocalypse Now is a movie that has always been treated well on home video. But for the jump to 4K UHD, they have outdone themselves with a truly definitive edition. Never have I seen the movie look this incredible on home video. And along with the new atmos-fueled "final cut," it includes the theatrical and redux cuts all in 4k. And on top of that, we get the 'Heart of Darkness' documentary and loads of extras. Just a brilliant new release.

4.
Prior to this release from Mill Creek, the only official NTSC version of the film I knew of was a non-anamorphic DVD. Now, perhaps there was a better official release out there that I didn't know of, but that's all I had. So when Mill Creek came along with a fancy steelbook, my expectations weren't very high. I figured it would be a mediocre disc in a fancy case. Well, I was way off. Fully remastered, the picture quality is great, and they included 2 cuts of the film along with a commentary. Mill Creek really stepped their game up with this one.

3.
This documentary is absolutely incredible. I saw it in the theater with my daughter opening weekend, and we were blown away. While watching it at home on a television doesn't quite measure up to the grandness of the theater experience with a movie like this, the blu looks and sounds excellent, and I'm thrilled to have it in my collection.

2.
This is a wild movie that I remember renting from the video store as a kid. But this release not includes that old truncated PG-13 home video version, but also the never before seen original uncut version. And it is in 4k with just perfect picture quality. I'm usually impressed with the restoration work VS does on these old forgotten movies, but this being their first 4k restoration, they went all out and it shows. And the extras include a new interview with Denise Richard's which was an impressive get considering how many stars basically disown their early low budget movies. The icing on the cake is a "3D" lenticular slipcover which let's us know that this one is special.

1.
What a year for Hitch fans. Criterion knocked this release out of the park. It's been a longtime favorite of mine, and while it has had some nice looking home video releases over the years, there hasn't been anything quite like this. Exquisite picture and sound quality and so chock full of extras, it's ridiculous. This release is perfection.

Hard to whittle down to just ten considering how many amazing releases we got this year. Honorable mentions to Twilight Time's Beat the Devil and Bedazzled, Olive's A Bucket of Blood, pretty much the entire 2019 slate from Criterion and Kino Lorber, etc.

In no order:

Are you a fan of spaghetti westerns/Italian crime films of the 60's? This is a challenging film but if you open your mind to it you'll be treated to a wild ride.

One of Hitch's top films, lovingly treated by Criterion.

A Giallo fan's dream come true, with Edwige Fenech as the icing on the bloody cake.

Mondo Macabro did an amazing job with this horror cult classic - worth buying for just the amazing, informative and in depth special features alone!

Wasn't sure if this could look any better than the blu...and then on 4K it did! Beautiful transfer of a horror classic.

Karloff and Lugosi together again!

This one I KNEW could look better than the blu, and it shines on 4K....

I can finally stop buying versions of this classic Argento, this is the pinacle (I hope....)

Arrow comes through again, a definitive edition and picture quality.

Recommended for those who can cast their mind back to high school and just go with this, singing and all. 2 cuts of the film and in depth special features.

Had to sneak in this 11th choice, just like Captain Benjamin Willard travels into the jungle for his secret mission...another 4K which does justice to this amazing fever dream of a film.

What a year. Had to cut some good titles to make the ten. Only one 1080p disc in my top ten, but Arrow's definitive Waterworld set was a dream release for me so it more than deserves its place.
