I've enjoyed more of the late Mr Schumacher's films than ones i have hated' Falling Down was quite superb, as was Phone Booth, and Batman Forever had it's moments, apart from it was a jarring change of tone from Tim Burton's brilliant films. He was a genuine talent.

8mm, Falling Down, Flatliners, The Lost Boys and A Time to Kill are my favorite Schumacher films. I've always considered him a great director even after the Batman fiasco. RIP

His Batman movies were arguably my favorites when I was a kid, for many reasons. Lost Boys was always a favorite in my household growing up too. Say what you will about his films, he always seemed like a cool guy with a sense of humor about his missed attempts. He'll be missed.

RIP, he got screwed over on his Batman films (WB interfered at every opportunity, just to avoid another Batman Returns controversy) and could honestly never escape their shadow after they became so hated. Which is a shame, because he's such a good filmmaker outside of his Batman movies. Lost Boys, Falling Down, even the little bit I've seen of Phone Booth were all really good movies. I still need to finish Phone Booth and need to watch 8MM (which I've heard is pretty good). The guy was very talented and pretty nice from what I've heard.

I saw The Lost Boys last night, and it was undoubtedly the best vampire flick I've ever witnessed. The perfect amount of humour, campiness, cheese and horror, and with a kickass soundtrack to boot.
Seeing Falling Down later today. |

8mm does have some redeeming qualities but it's not very good. My personal favorites from Joel are Phone Booth and Falling Down. Tigerland is also alright.

in a bizarre happenstance of timing, i received my copy of 8MM that i'd ordered from Shout Factory some few months ago yesterday just hours after reading the news here. i think it rates in my personal top 3 of his. elated to have the brief new interview included.
i solidly enjoy this movie even in spite of Nic Cage, who's more liable to ruin a good movie for me than to bring anything of value. but here's proof the sun shines even on a bad actor once in a while |

Joel Schumacher was an interesting director who always had a unique vision that involved an ear for soundtrack cuts and a phenomenal eye not only visuals but also for spotting talent.
For years I have tried to get the word out on the original intended cut of Batman Forever, started multiple petitions and it is a darn shame it couldn’t get done while he was still with us. BF is a picture I always defend and has great stuff in it underneath the studio editing. He was royally screwed on B&R by WB and tried to make the best of it. Even he wanted to go darker and try a Year One adaptation. Afterwards he got stuck with the nipple on the bat suit moniker which is actually quite unfair and few had any idea what pressures they were all under. But he handled it with great humor and grace which is what I’ve always found most endearing about him. Listening to interviews and especially his commentaries show a rarity in the industry: a gentleman. He even goes out of his way in those tracks to specifically name each and every key crew member years after the fact and praise their contributions. His later films range from interesting to keeping on working and while I think he had a slight tendency to go over the top a tad here and there-he did not at all deserve to be kicked down the ladder rungs over B&R which let’s face it is not that bad-and especially when you know how it was a no-win scenario. A really interesting underrated and forgotten little picture of his was Flawless which has a great pairing between DeNiro and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Genuinely sad news. We really don’t have intelligent and warm creative people working in this way any longer. And if there are they usually are assimilated into the corporate machine. |
