Justin Simien is getting real about last year's Lando debacle.

Three years after first being announced but with nothing to show for it, concerning news broke that the Simien-helmed, Donald Glover-starring Solo: A Star Wars Story spinoff series would instead be a movie. Since then, again, nothing.

The radio silence resumed until Friday, when Collider published remarks from Simien indicating that Lando will not be moving forward.

In an interview with Collider's Christina Radish, Simien vented his feelings over the saga of the stalled series.

"It was pretty developed," he shared. "There was a Bible, there was concept art, there were scripts, but it just wasn’t meant to be."

Man, I do think it's a shame that it was cancelled. Say what you will about Solo (I personally love it), but Glover's Lando is pretty universally praised. He was certainly charismatic and gave it his all, and getting more of his performance would've been great. Would also have given audiences more with the character; I've always really wanted to like Lando, and I feel like I've gotten close at times (honestly, due in large part to Glover), but it always feels like he's missing something or underutilized. Which can work well, in the case of, say, Boba Fett (before his resurrection), but for Lando it often felt to me like they just didn't know what to do with him after Empire (at least as far as the movies are concerned- I haven't read too many of the books or comics)

I feel like the time period could've made for some really interesting stories as well. Yeah, it's not entirely unknown to audiences, but the early days of the Rebellion could've been a really interesting thing to explore. We're seeing a bit of it in Andor, granted, but seeing it through the eyes of a character like Lando, who's a bit less serious than Cassian and can utilize his charm over street smarts when need be, could've been quite intriguing. Not to mention all the loose story threads from Solo that may just never be followed up on- Crimson Dawn and Maul most importantly. I would've loved to have seen more of Enfys Nest too. A really cool design for a greatly underutilized character (as is Star Wars' specialty). Knowing she worked with Saw Guerrera and played even a tiny part in Jyn's story (as told in the epilogue of the Solo novel) could've made her an interesting recurring ally.

Nothing unusual really; Lucasfilm cancels around half of the SW projects they announce. Because things are going really well.
