I also don’t see a need for them to add new bonus content. Put the movie on a 4K disc, add the old Blu-ray (with old bonus content) and slap it in a case. You may get a bone if it was a ‘major’ movie. Just my opinion and how I would like it to play out (as a worst case scenario).
That's the way I interpret it; Disney is just going to be way more selective when it comes to what gets a 4K physical release and what doesn't. For example; Aliens - Yes, Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes - Probably not.

They've always been like that so there isn't really any news here.

I mean if like the other studios they see UHD as just an enhanced variant of HD Blu-ray. Then certainly selectiveness is more on the table.

Though we are starting to see certainly more from Sony of it becoming the defacto standard for their catalogue output. Warner are edging in that direction now, Paramount? Who knows. They've got two major anniversaries to observe, only HD Blu-rays confirmed.

Lionsgate have their supposed 100, SC have given them a boost.

MGM is a wait and see with Warner now fortunately in charge.

I’m sure we can all read between the lines. I’ve started a petition on Change.org in the hope it might get somewhere once they admit to it!

Please, do point out the part of Disney's statement that refutes what Bill Hunt has said he's been told by his industry contacts.

I think people twist the rumours he reports on into far harder evidence than he is suggesting. But as others have said, the proof will be in the pudding.

Nothing has changed, Disnee are being Disnee. One more time: the 'news' was NOT that they were giving up on 4K UHD disc. The 'news' was that they were suspending any more LIVE ACTION catalogue discs that weren't mega-franchise related, but as we've had such a pathetic amount of live action UHD content from Disnee that wasn't older than a few years or not franchise/remake related then. Nothing. Has. Changed.

And their 'rebuttal' means **** all. They confirmed that they're not dropping 4K, yes, BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT THIS 'NEWS' WAS ABOUT. Only people who can't read thought that's what this was about. No. Major new movies will continue to be released by them on 4K (watch when Mulan '20 gets announced and people say "we did it, folks!" - ummm, nope) and we will still get catalogue animated titles for some of the remaining classics that are in the vault (we'll get the crumbs in Europe, unfortunately). But they hate supporting "old" live action catalogue on disc in general, that's not an 'insider' scoop but should be rather obvious to anyone with working eyes who's kept even the most cursory overview of Disnee's disc output over the last few years.

That we're getting Home Alone and Hocus Pocus on UHD at all is the anomaly of coursh, they are indeed perennially popular titles but why throw us those bones and then decide to close the door completely without even seeing how they perform, that's just bizarre. Covid gonna covid, sure, but as home video revenues were UP for the other major studios then it doesn't take a genius to see that there's money to be made. But the Mouse won't even wipe his arse with less than $10,000 which is why he's been so dismissive of live action catalogue stuff.

Wait people misleading about a story? How could such an abomination happen? The horror of it! It’s the Internet after all, even I bought it at first cuz it’s Disney & I’ve said they will be the first one to do away with physical media eventually. However I do hope they release more 4K catalog titles.

Look at his track record it’s not hard to look it up when the hd dvd war was going on. I would trust a phone scammer more then him he burned to many bridges to even consider a word he says.

The name of your petition is sending the wrong message. Disney is not abandoning all UHD releases, just live action catalogue titles.

You need to change the title of this thread because Disney said nothing of the kind about 4k catalog discs.

I can kind of see why they might have wanted to ditch them. They already have a really successful streaming service and dvd's probably still their cash cow when it comes to physical media. They've definitely held a lot of their chips on a few select franchises that are nearly guaranteed to turn a big profit. Marvel Studios has mostly been printed money for them on pretty much any platform despite the enormous budgets for each film, but they can also likely generate a whole lot of sales through toys and clothing as well. As for Fox, they had an amazing catalog and Disney has to figure out what they'll do with it besides just park it on Disney+. As much as people on here love uhd, it's still a niche product and nowhere near 1% of Disney's annual income. They're basically playing the penny slots with them as a kind of side hustle. Hopefully they'll further upgrade DMC titles to uhd and consider making the blus wide releases at some point, but they probably enjoy the control of their membership services. Unfortunately, Disney has the power and the influence to pretty much do whatever they want at this point in regards to their physical media releases.

I'm just going by the title of the article. I'm not about to correct the mistake/deliberately inaccurate headline of Forbes.

Why? Because that just puts more pressure on them to get us some proper clarity. In case you had not noticed from article, someone, potentially, from their publication is viewing the forum.

I'd guess those titles were far enough along in the production pipeline (with committed costs) that they decided to just let them be released regardless. I suspect they already know how well they're likely to perform, and only expectation-shatteringly high levels of sales would make them reconsider.

How do we know anyone misread anything? Like many others they could be worried this is the tip of the iceberg and more is to come.
