Yes, see my edit. That's new though - Pieter would've made proper entries here for sure otherwise.

I already preordered it before so that's not a problem for me.

Amazon UK also says 3 discs.

What kind of extras would merit an extra blu-ray disc? I'm hoping for a feature length documentary about the making of the movie.

StudioCanal will put any old shit on there to make up an extra disc. It might still be something worthwhile but I wouldn't get too excited just yet.

Studio canal are the only ones I swear who love second discs. Maybe it's because they know they can't encode for s*** or because they think that because they are targeting a premium market they can make more sales this way. Criterion, Arrow(limited editions can be 2 discs), Warner, Sony, Universal and others it seems try to cram all bonus content onto the same disc if they can getaway with it.

The pace is glacial but it is also effortlessly cool. It's a pretty mood dependent movie for me, but when I'm feeling it, it's good stuff. Really looking forward to the transfer. I hope it doesn't suck because I put my Criterion on ebay already.

Army of Shadows goes well with Le Cercle Rouge. So if you like the Rouge go for the Shadows!

Army of Shadows would be great, as it could fix the awful colour grading. (The same thing I hope SC will do for their UHD of Kurosawa's Ran)

I wonder if StudioCanal will do any 4K Blu-rays next year. The films I would like them to put on 4K Blu-ray in the UK next year is:
Highlander (1986) for its 30th anniversary
The rest of Jean-Pierre Melville's movies that were distributed by StudioCanal (1956-1972)
More of the Ealing Studios library
More of the Vintage World Cinema and Vintage Classics library

I'd love to see The Wicker Man in 4K. I know some of the Final Cut and certainly the Director's Cut is in bad shape but hopefully there's something they could do with the rest of it

We know that Peeping Tom is likely and I would be surprised if they don't upgrade Mulholland Drive and Man Who Fell to Earth for their 20th and 45th anniversaries (respectively) considering they have 4K transfers ready to go.

The movie is 2h20 and I can understand wanting to keep as much space as possible for its new 4K restoration. It'll probably retain the extras from the 2010 disc (since they were also retained in the Melville boxset), which cumulate 172 min (even if IIRC they're mostly in SD).

I don't think people would think opportunistic to add such a combination spread over 2 discs.

It's a more general extra about Melville but the 2010 disc was already coming with a 77 min documentary.

As altruistic as it may seem, it's just dumb ****ing luck: StudioCanal would use a five minute fluff featurette as an excuse to use a seperate disc these days. Besides, if they're not getting FiM to encode it then I'm not sure the disc space really matters, we're still at the mercy of whatever eejit authoring house they choose to employ. (And if David M were to encode it he'd still produce a better looking encode of the main movie than said eejits even WITH all those extras on the 4K disc.)

Oh, I totally agree that it's not just a matter of space and runtimes. It's just that in the present case, that's one movie where it can make sense.

I'm totaly fine with this movie taking up the entire BD-100 disc all by itself.

Geoff is right though : if the encoder isn't setup perfectly, taking up the whole BD-100 won't prevent having compression issues. On the other hand, I think all the extras are native SD, so they wouldn't have taken much space on the disc.

And it's not like SC fill the disc anyway, with Breathless they used a UHD66 as it's such a short movie but the total AV encode is like ~40GB in size so it's not even maxed out. It's got some extras on the 4K disc but that only bumps it up to like 53GB in total.
