And yes, I know Jackie starred in Cub Tiger From Kwantung first, but let's be honest, New Fist of Fury was his first widely released starring role, lol.
Why is that the English dubs always feel out of place / distracting on martial arts and kung fu movies? Newer ones don't have this issue, but older had this problem and were somewhat cartoony.

Generally, they were dubbed in Hong Kong by expats in a variety of English language accents. They were not usually professional actors.

I'm the complete reverse. Having watched most of my Kung Fu flicks on a 10 inch B&W TV on a UHF station running a grainy as hell pan and scan dubbed version, the dubs are right and proper to my ears. Its the new ones that are out of place.

Funny enough, Mike Leeder tweeted about getting me, him, Arne, and KF Bob on a four way commentary... and he suggested Fantasy Mission Force. I think it would just turn into RiffTrax at that point

Loving the trailer, especially with the music put into it.

Btw the new artwork is revealed on the 88Films pages but I dont know how to post it. Looking pretty good to, probably my favourite so far!

That cover is great, right up there with Fearless Hyena and Dragons Forever which are my favourites. Glad to hear Kung Fu Bob’s doing another commentary along with Brandon pang yau Bentley. Both of these guys have done brilliant commentaries so I have high hopes for this. I think these commentaries and the picture/sound quality should make this an excellent release of an otherwise unpopular movie. Thanks for giving us so much to look forward to this year 88 Films and crew.

Having only ever seen the shorter cut, I'm looking forward to this.

That's why I'm so happy we got both cuts on there, as it's been quite a while since the two hour cut's been released... the US Columbia/Tri-Star DVD is one of the last times it got put on disc.

The best way I can put it is the two hour Mandarin cut is more of a slow burn, while the 83ish minute Cantonese cut is a race to the finish line, prioritizing Jackie's scenes. What I love best about multiple cuts on these releases is the "accidental film school" showing what works and what doesn't in various versions.

We’ve had a few discs since with that cut, but none with English subtitles and Mandarin.

That’s true.

Two hours is longer than the average, but it does give depth and explanations. If I was given the job of chopping it down, I don’t think I’d know what to do. What would you do?

I’d tighten some of the lousier choreography, come to think of it.

Lo Wei was a decent director (or a director of decent films!) during his Shaw period. But he seemed to lose interest as time went on, and New Fist is a prime example. It's stodgy and very talky, which is not something you can usually accuse a kung fu film of being!

This. There is no other movie out there that I started that often and fell asleep every single time. Owned many different releases of it before already, but doing the comparison between the shorter cut and the original version was indeed the first time I made it to the end credits:

Looking forward to listen to this anyway though. A prime example of the stories behind it being more interesting than the film itself. Even though NFOF admittedly isn't thaaat bad after all as my post may sound. Anyway, as extras have always been rare on these early Jackies, it's nice to see the release is packed with two audio commentaries. Bob's on THE MASTER was entertaining too.

Both commentaries on the longer original version, right?

Which cut is the best way to experience this film anyway? I mean, if the movie isn't that great, i dont know if i'll be watching it twice. Maybe after some time between viewings
