I'm a fan of Criterion, but I still dog them at every point be because at this point they can go 4K. They just refused to.

Yeah, they really have no excuse. I get that they still sell a lot of DVD and all of the other reasons that they've offered up, but they don't need to release everything on 4K - Vinegar Syndrome, Kino and Arrow don't - but they should have at least released something by this point. It's more glaring when they release a title such as The Elephant Man which has been released on 4K in other markets.

Universal doing a 4K of this great movie makes me very scared.
After the DNR fest of Back to the Future and how great the Criterion looks until I see great reviews this a hard pass. If Criterion would only go 4K thry woukd truly dominate. The Three Color Trilogy would be top of my list. |

If you consider a bit too much processing, DNR, and an entire reel with chroma encoding errors to be "pretty good," then it was... eh... pretty good. Better than the old Blu-ray, sure, but Universal didn't exactly bring their A game.

If they do, that could make licensing 4K remasters presented in 4K with HDR easier for Kino Lorber, Shout! Factory and Arrow Video when it comes to WB and Paramount titles, save for the MGM library (post-1986 MGM, most UA & Orion titles, etc.), which Warner has the current home video license to since the Disney/Fox deal lapsed. |

I wouldn't be surprised if Bob Gale had something to do with the inconsistent PQ on BTTF. Gale was credited as a "transfer supervisor" on Criterion's "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" and that had inconsistent uses of DNR (Criterion rarely have noticeable DNR on their in-house remasters). Not to mention, he supposedly did oversee the old HD master of BTTF.
