You might be suprised BD-9s arnt that hard to make now days particularly since those 720p mkv torrents seam to be designed to fit on a DL DVD. Its not that hard now. I read up alot about it when i was trying to get transformers in HD.
other then the BD logo/colour/case everything else is the regular DVDs info/art

Why are so many problems always originating in China? They produce all those lead-based toys, many, many fake DVD's and CD's, bird flu and now a poor attempt to trick people with BD logos.

Don't get me started on their "Polystation 3" and "Vii." Yuck.

i flip to the back of the case and i see it says DVD-9 dolby digital 5.1, i talk to the guy and he's like yeah they're dvds...

but the packaging has a blue strip on the top with the Blu-Ray logo and it says Blu-Ray Disc!

i forgot to take a picture of it, tomorrow i guess

but wow guess the chinese piraters arent able to pirate blu-rays so they're just selling dvds as blus.

so anyway hope it doesnt confuse a bunch of ppl on the quality of blu-ray

what else is odd is i notice our shopping centres don't care if stores/stalls are selling fake goods. theres one that sells fake LV, gucci, etc purses
Dude! You are front-page news. Congratulations on being recognized by Blu-ray.com.

There aren't any big malls where I live so I have not seen those kiosks selling fake Blu-ray disks. But I am not surprised. Buyer beware of new Blu-ray disks that sell way under $20.00 We do have a Sam's Club here and most of my BDs were bought at around $25 ea. The cheapest one I ever bought new was $19.99. But, my dad always tells me you get what you pay for when you buy cheap. That $19.99 BD has poor sound quality for a LPCM 5.1 track but the video is ok. But it is a genuine BD release of an older MGM movie.

Thanks for the heads up I'll be sure to avoid such fakes and not be taken in if I run across any. The best thing to do is just boycott them

What was it Terminator/Robocop? That's not MGM's fault, that's simply a source issue. Neither one of those movies will ever look that great, and their Blu versions are fantastic, better than any prints I've ever seen of either one

I guess people returning them because they are a fraud would cause the retailers to make some move.

It's disappointing that not selling counterfeit isn't the reaction.

That's just like the early days of DVD. My gf then was Chinese, and her mom would buy movies at the local Chinese mall - there were still lots of (S)VCDs, and most of the movies packaged as DVDs were really VCDs.

It's the same thing. And if you go back and complain, what will you hear? After all, they still play, right?

Was down at Southern CA last weekend for a company event, took the wife and kid with me so we can go visit my old playgrounds... And what do I find? DVD-9 Blu-rays!!! They are everywhere, even some of the larger electronic stores that sells thousands and thousands of copyrighted legitament stores carry those! Went to Alhambra, Rowland Heights, and Monterey Park, and those are ALL I saw! I asked the clerks if they carried any real BDs, they actually looked at me and said 'oh yeah, here you go,' and tried to hand me a knock-off.

Finally one clerk explained that DVD-9 is a new compression technology that can store massive amount of data onto a standard dvd. So it is possible for those to carry HD files... Just with the compression Im not sure on the quality, and I wasnt gonna waste $10 to find out.

Oh I guess you have to buy their players to make these work... Apparently standard DVD players cant play them

Report them to mall management, and tell them to send them to the MPAA if it's a question of legtimacy.

DVD-9 is dual-layer DVD. It's typically put onto bootlegs to indicate "quality"

Did you happen to notice if it was actually DVD format? Because I wonder if they're maybe AVCHD? Someone got creative and took the AVCHD format (HD camcorder codec) which supports dvd media with UDF 2.5, and ripped/encoded BDs and HDDVDs in 720p and 1080p. I've seen some 720p fit on a dvd5, 1080p on a dvd9. They obviously only rip the lossy codecs due to space limitations, but the results are actually pretty convincing.
