I wish Voyager and DS9 could be remastered in hd like TNG. Sigh.

This website says otherwise.

Better than nothing. Means they can release it on Blu-ray. It's what they do for Doctor Who. If they can't make a true HD master for something, you upscale it and that's what they've thankfully done.

On Paramount+ US neither Voyager nor DS9 are streaming in HD upconverted or otherwise no matter what JustWatch says. They are SD only. I just checked with the actual Paramount+ App and the Paramount Channel on an AppleTV 4K.

It looks like garbage compared to actual HD and not worth the cost of mastering and pressing and packaging and marketing discs. The DVDs already get what they can from those masters. Doctor Who was shot on videotape and there's no escaping that. VOY and DS9 were shot on film so there's 4K worth of info on those negatives.

They're streamed using their in-house upconverter for a 1080p compatible signal. They haven't been upconverted "professionally" like some SD->HD remasters on Blu-ray. It's not much but it does look a bit better than Netflix's SD streaming from before.

I'll agree that upscaling is largely AWFUL. I'll take the Stargate SG-1 DVDs over the blu-rays any day.

I'd imagine new SD masters from the tape masters would be superior to the DVDs. Things like the Trek shows and The X-Files didn't have the best treatment on DVD. It wouldn't be a night and day difference, but considering some of the releases we chase for slightly better encoding it could be decent enough for some.

But we would all love HD masters, even if they're hybrids.

My bad I didn't know. If they can make true HD masters they absolutely should. If they can't then do the Doctor Who route of upscaling to 1080p and doing what they can with remastering.

Some people might not like upscale releases but if it's the best they can do I am all for it.

I'm also sure an upscale would improve over the DVDs. That'd still be a perverse thing to do for a popular franchise when the film elements are sitting right there.

I also don't think the SD masters would magically become much better. From the look of them, a lot of 90s-style DNR is burnt in at the source. Even the early HD-mastered Enterprise has this burnt in. At least Voyager is a step up from the analogue-style video artefacts of pre-restoration TNG and early DS9.

The bleedin' audio as well - its 384kbps DD5.1 which sounds muddy to my ears (IMO the average 5.1 DVD standard of 448kbps should be the bare minimum for compressed multi-channel audio). That's probably one area where an upscale could really improve upon, just by replacing the heavily compressed DVD audio with a lossless encode.

So, now that we have that nonsense out of the way - did this ever come out?

The last update in March said that principle photography was complete and they are on track for releasing in Spring 2024.

I wish they would remaster the shots with people and just AI machine learn the shots of ships and other FX. I'm assuming they are never going to do a full TNG type remaster, but it is painful watching this great series in SD.

Paramount should do a TNG style remaster for the 2-part pilot and another 4 episodes that are fan favorites and low on effects. Put it out on 4k and see how it sells.

Then do the same for DS9.

December Update!
Hello Voyager fans!

UPDATE
We are continuing to edit the film at breakneck speed, and still hope to announce dates in the late Spring for backer screenings in the late Summer. The documentary is looking fantastic. As always, we will continue to update you throughout the process.

And even more importantly, now that the industry strikes are over, we have been cleared to bring some of the Voyager cast back to film some footage at legendary Paramount Studios, where the original Star Trek began in 1966, and where all seven seasons of Star Trek Voyager were shot.

Was it ever announced whether the team had scanned any of the Voyager negatives for this documentary, ala DS9?
