Happy to see this but hold the eff on because this didn’t even clear $60 mil at the global box office but VALKYRIE made over $200 mil and yet still didn’t meet KL’s minimum projected profitability standard for a 4K release…? Da hell…?

There's enough Tom Cruise out already.

Quite the surprise but like everyone else I’m very excited for this. Rewatched it recently this year and it’s such a great film. Very interested to see how this new 4K master turns out. Will it be a 2K upconvert with a new HDR grade or a brand new 4K scan of the negative?

I mean, Valkyrie had mixed reviews and was directed by an alleged sex offender, even if it might sell copies based on Cruise and the WWII setting. Whereas Eastern Promises is critically acclaimed and has Cronenberg/Mortensen/Cassel/Watts that will guarantee purchases by film fans. Something like Valkyrie strikes me as a more casual sort of purchase and I'm not sure 4Kers are in general a casual wide audience.

Isn't Arrow releasing Legend?

Watchmen already holds that title. I mean, it's a CGI dick, but it's still a dick.

I don’t have non-U.S. numbers but VALKYRIE earned $28 mil from domestic home video sales, while EASTERN PROMISES cleared slightly under half of that, $13.7. Even using your argument that 4K customers are cut from a different kind of cloth (and if you look at any number of wtf titles that have made it to the format, it’s clear that studios pretty much en masse don’t see that to be the case), the economics still can’t be upended enough by that to justify VALKYRIE being dropped from consideration as a no-profit risk (the sex offender thing is more understandable, but in a world where the X-MEN films are presently being given all new premium Steelbook makeovers, that one doesn’t stick the landing for me, either).

I guess there's two years until the 15th anniversary, so maybe then?

MIDSOMMAR has full-frontal nudity.

Come to think of it, so does Aster's first film, HEREDITARY , also available on UHD.

The kooky thing is that the indies seem to be turning MORE towards esoterica and kult klassiks for their 4K stuff rather than recent-ish mid-tier Hollywood fluff like Valkyrie. I dare say that they’re capitalising on the gap in the UHD market left by Criterion, not that UHD has gone full Art House yet but the take up of slasher schlock by Blue Underground has been remarkable, we’ve had an actual Porn Film released on UHD by Vinegar Syndrome, Second Sight are doing Martin and Dog Soldiers and Arrow are doing what they do best: crank out the gialli. Releasing Valkyrie would look rather...tame.

I think if Hannibal had shifted more units, Kino might have gone in the direction of films like Valkyrie.

My blind guess would be that Valkyrie, being a Tom Cruise action flick, commands a higher licensing fee than Eastern Promises. So while Valkyrie would likely sell more units, it would have to do so at a much higher volume than Eastern Promises to clear the same bar, and they must figure that wouldnt happen. But given how quickly they sold out of Spaceballs and the good the bad and the ugly they may want to reconsider their figures.
