While I’ll definitely be getting this, when are Tarantino’s movies hitting 4K to go with this? Lionsgate, Paramount, and Universal are dropping their catalog titles left and right, and yet probably the biggest director today’s films are still missing on the format. True Romance and Out Of Sight got 4Ks, and all the rest got squat.
(If by some chance you’re a noob with no idea what I’m talking about, Out Of Sight and Jackie Brown we’re written by the same author and share some characters. It will always be part of the Tarantino universe to me.) |

Soderbergh said he's trying to get an HDR pass done on all his movies (pretty ambitious) and even convinced Criterion to do for one for sex, lies and videotape.
Curious what we get next. "Soderbergh: Well, I think it was a movie that ended up being around for a lot of different format shifts, you know? When the movie was first released we were still looking at cassettes, and we had the glory of laserdiscs. Then DVDs showed up, so we had to prepare for that. Then high-def showed up and we had to prepare for that. The technology that exists to create these masters continues to improve. So for instance, even though we might’ve ingested the movie at 4K 10 or 12 years ago for the Sony Blu-ray, the scanners that exist today are a lot better – and now we have HDR. So even though, in this case, it was just coming out on Blu-ray, I requested, and Criterion agreed, to create a 4K HDR version of the master in preparation for a time when either Criterion starts making those kinds of streams available or there’s a decision down the road to put out a physical 4K HDR Blu-ray. I wanted to be ready for all of that. It also coincided with a project that I think is going to take a long, long time, which is to attempt to get everything I’ve done re-mastered and brought into the 4K HDR world. We’ve been spending a lot of time lately focusing on some of the titles that have reverted back to me and that I control. I’m reaching out to all the companies that I’ve worked with in the past to see if they’d be interested in going back and re-mastering the films in this new format. The good news is that totally coincidentally, Fox decided on their own to go back and re-master Solaris in 4K HDR and I just saw that two weeks ago. So we’re chipping away at it." |

That would make it difficult to pair with the US film TRAFFIC (not a miniseries), which is controlled by Universal. Also, I don't think TRAFFIK has been remastered in HD yet, there hasn't been a UK BD. That said, anyone buying TRAFFIK should avoid the US DVD, at least the 2001 edition. All the foreign language scenes were badly redubbed in English for the US market. The UK DVD had those scenes in the original German, etc, with subtitles. For anyone wondering why there's German in it, the Catherine Zeta-Jones subplot took place in Hamburg in the miniseries, instead of San Diego. Acorn did re-release TRAFFIK on DVD in 2009, I have no idea if they corrected the audio on that edition, but both the 2001 and 2009 Acorn DVD sets are PAL-NTSC conversions of a 25fps UK production anyway, so the PAL DVD is preferable regardless. |

I remember this interview from a few years back. So sad that, not long after the interview, Fox ceased to exist and the 4K remaster of Solaris, one of my favorite films by Soderbergh, got buried in a vault.

RE no HD remaster for Traffik - that question was posed in the old channel 4 forums (which, IIRC, were closed when they didn't renew the Big Brother [which accounted for something ridiculous like 75% of the traffic and content] contract) years ago, and the official response from a 4 bod - when they actually engaged with their audience - was that it would never happen. I don't recall there being any more detail than that, but given HD TVs were the norm by then and blu ray was already getting some traction I think those of us who were interested just shrugged our shoulders and accepted it. Was the later US miniseries any good? Why can't I remember anything about it? |
